A classic 90s Spoons with booths, bookcases and varnish trim. Neat inbuilt fireplace in the middle of the pub which sadly looked unused, maybe they couldn’t trust the locals not to abuse it. Of amusement value was a retained COVID-era Perspex screen set which was fashioned into a booth – maybe this feature will see its inclusion in the CAMRA National Inventory come 2040. Ground floor bogs, a pleasant rarity. A regular GBG lister and there were six guest cask, my Allendale Wolf was close to fag-end but still good (NBSS 3.5) served-up by friendly staff. I also dropped in for a bit of grub and a herbal high a couple of nights later to find a nice, genteel atmosphere. From a toper’s perspective this is the better Spoons of the two but both the JDWs have their merits and given Carlisle town centre is mostly shut midweek evenings (and doesn’t have much in the way of quality regardless), they’re default options. The unusual name is that Ma Wilson was born in Carlisle. 7.5

Quite a pleasant Wetherspoons with cosy booths to sit in. Rapid, speed of light service, a lot of the old Wetherspoons issues are now redundant with most customers using the app. The food was pinged in record breaking time. All ales £2 a pint besides the sadly dull and bland Ruddles which is currently on at a ridiculous 99p. No wonder it was so busy.

The most JDW of all JDWs. Converted shop. Sticky tables. Packed but strangely, no one at the bar.

Good Beer Guide 2021 and you cannot argue with quality Corby Ale for £1.99.

Not my cup of tea or where I would choose to go for entertainment.

Another roughly square ‘spoons, better decor than the one up the road, lots of dark wood mainly in bookcase form with a big fireplace in the middle of the pub. All on one level apart from at one end, even the bogs are on the ground floor. Usual ‘spoons mix of seating from (non-Perspex) booths to higher seats and the street frontage is all window and doors. The counter to one side has two banks of seven pulls, usual suspects, a couple of ciders and a good range of guests in decent nick, it is GBG 2020 listed, careingly their notice board only manages a 2016 poster. The “tone” appears more gentile than the William Rufus too. There is a rear patio area but I don’t do outdoor drinking as a rule.

This is without doubt the better of the two Carlisle Spoons apart from the beer prices. It's fairly typical consisting of a large square room with the bar on the right, a raised area to the left and the usual fixtures and fittings.
It was quite busy at around 10:30 on a Saturday morning but not hopelessly so. There are two banks of seven hand pumps with the two GK beers, two unused and Doom Bore accounting for five. The rest had a good selection of Hawkshead Bitter & Red, Cumberland Corby Ale & Corby Blonde, Jennings Snecklifter, Hadrian's Legion, Everard's Inbetween, Rudgate Battle Axe and Thornbridge Jaipur IPA. I tried the Hadrian's Legion and Cumberland Corby (both £2.15) along with an Eggs Benedict and later the Jaipur (£2.85 I think) before getting the train back. All were excellent. This is a better than average Spoons and deserves inclusion in the 2016 GBG.

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about The Woodrow Wilson (JD Wetherspoon)

Standard issue 'spoons with the usual furniture and decor. Patio beer garden to the rear. Reasonable range of real ales from a total of ten handpumps, including the local Geltsdale Tarn (£2.29).

A decent Wetherspoons this and features in the 2010 Good Beer Guide. Plenty of ales on offer, and we had Derwent Parsons Pledge, Black Beck Trial Run and Bitter End Lakeland Amber. 2 other Bitter End beers available soon. All beers in good condition and service was pronpt too.

Has a good selection of real ales on tap, better than most Wetherspoons. The beer is usually well kept, but I have been served one or two dodgy ones in the past, changed without complaint though. Apart from that, well it's a box chaped Wetherspoons with no outstanding features. It's by far the most peaceful of the two JDWs on Botchergate on a Friday/Saturday though.

This spacious Wetherspoons pub is named after the 28th President of the United States, whose mother came from this area, and was the former co-op store. It is situated close to the station, and is always our first port of call when attending the races. We normally have the breakfast and a couple of pints of a guest beer at prices that wont break the bank.
