A nicely-kept between-wars pub with great woodwork and parquet flooring. The walls are trimmed with the traditional sort of pub junk - sorry, decorations, with just a sports TV to bring in some modernity. It has quite a strong food trade, with both rooms laid up for Sunday lunch, but is still very welcoming for drinkers, and the riverside terrace at the back is still good on a sunny day. Cask ales on were TT Landlord, Black Sheep Best and Copper Dragon Golden Pippin and condition was fine. A good solid pub in the old style.

Review below was in 2016, and we called in last month. Chose Westgate Mason's Blonde and Black Sheep Best Bitter which were fine. Pleasant sitting at a table outside overlooking the river Fosse.

Called in this pub which has reopened. They had 2 ales on from Cross Bay brewery, both of which were fine.

Two reasonable sized rooms as Oldboots says comfortably furnished, the beer selection seemed to be leaning toward the usual suspect end of the spectrum, I had a pint of the only one that was maybe not,Merrie City Atlantic Hop but this turned out to be no great shakes, we came here with the main purpose to eat though and from that point of view was quite decent but would probably rule this one out in any future visits to York.

Two rooms in Brewer's Tudor the counter is to the right from the centre door with 4 pumps and there's another couple next door. A couple of beers were on their last legs but were changed without question by the charming bar staff. Pig motif in the comfortable traditionally furnished right side lounge. The left is more a public bar in style.

We called in early on a Monday eve and the pub had quietened down to just a handful of people. The interior was impressive with it's oak panelling and stunning fireplace. This pub is also tipped by locals as a very good place to eat. There was a couple of people near to us, tucking in to a large roast dinner with Yorkshire puds. The food looked to be home cooked and not bought in. Four handpumps, I went for the Maxim Surf n' Sip and Thwaites Little Bewdy.

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about Masons Arms

Quite an impressive example of 'Brewers' Tudor' architecture, set back from the road a bit so the best views are probably from the nearby city walls. Only one of the two bars was open, but this is impressively decorated with wood panelling and a grand fire place (all somewhat reminiscent of the main hall of a small Gothic castle). In addition to the regular Black Sheep, Moorhouses White Mist (£3.10), Pennine Amber Neckar and a beer from Wall's in Northallerton were available from the four handpumps. Overall, worth stopping off in this part of the city.

Pleasant old style 2 roomed pub which is quite foody in the right hand room. Both rooms are nicely decorated with old sewing machine tables and comfortable seating in both rooms. Lot's of bric-a-Brac around the place. Six handpumps on the go doubling up in the two rooms. I had a Slater's Anzac which was a pretty average beer though it was well kept. I think Slater's have lost their way at the moment. There are 4 letting rooms at the rear of the pub as well. It's a nice enough pub, but by no means a must visit.

My first visit here, and what a warm comfy pub this is. The Milestone Rich Ruby and York Guzzler were good. The menus on boards behind the bar gave good food choice, although it was a pound or two above a lot of food places around York. Looked good on the plates coming out to the diners though.

Soup Dragon left this review about Masons Arms

This is a smart mock-Tudor looking pub, eatery and hotel on the outskirts of the city centre. The lower-half of the building is in stone, the upper, undressed brick, with timber frame and a central front facing gable. There is a patio.

The interior has two rooms that form a U-shape around the bar that faces you on entry, with a larger main room and smaller side room. The décor is white and wood panel, with a small tiled fireplace in the side room and a nice wood fireplace in the main room. The place leans strongly to the food market, but a drinker would feel comfortable here as well. There is an eclectic collection of ephemera and pictures, with plates, hanging jugs and pots scattered about. We didn’t eat here and it didn’t seem that cheap, but the surroundings are nice – even the loos are nicely tiled. Music was supplied at a decent level via the radio and there was a TV that wasn’t on. The service was fine, but there was no other clientele at my midday visit.

Beer; tap stuff with Everard’s Tiger, Black Sheep Bitter, York Brewery’s Guzzler and Terrier – the Black Sheep was fine.

A decent place, with a decent range of beer. I would be more than happy to go back here.
