The Regal Moon is a large town centre Wetherspoons pub, located in a grand building, which dates back to 1938 when it opened as the Regal cinema. The interior feels pretty vast on entering with row upon row of seating in the lower level section at the front of the pub. The servery is located about halfway back along the right hand wall, with a raised seating area beyond complete with fireplace and typical Wetherspoons booths with coloured glass that matches the pub’s windows. A second entrance can be found at the rear of the pub where there is also a limited amount of outdoor seating. There are a few nice features including several ornate pillars, a mannequin playing an organ above the bar and lots of pictures of various entertainers from cinema history.
Three banks of six hand pumps allow for a strong ale selection including ‘Spoons regulars, plenty of guests and the odd cider. I tried a pint of the Goose Eye Black Moor (£2.10) which was on fine form and very enjoyable. The staff seemed like a well drilled bunch and I thought they were very friendly and helpful. I understand that the pub was named Wetherspoons cask pub of the year for 2011 and with such a good range of well kept beer, it’s hard to argue with that assessment.
I think the best Wetherspoons pubs combine great beer with an interesting old building and this place certainly ticks both of those boxes. With friendly service as well, this is definitely one of the best Wetherspoons I have found on my travels and it should merit a visit regardless of your views on the chain.
