One main room with a further room to the right rear. Bar to the middle. Mainly keg with two weak real ales. Food area on the left hand side.

Formerly the Royal Standard, this is a rather grand corner pub along a pretty stretch of Victoria Park Road in an increasingly gentrified part of Hackney and within spitting distance of Victoria Park.

Out front there's ample beer patio space with flowers. The interior is quite imposing with high ceilings, columns and antique-style adornments and prints. There's a sofa area by the fireplace, furniture is solid, eclectic with tables of various sizes.

There's a central side bar next to an open kitchen (of which I'm not a fan due to the heat and noise). To the rear there are a handful of small, quiet rooms. This isn't a hotbed of real ale, though there were some taps dispensing beers from the Meantime brewery and possibly the Camden Brewery. All this to a muted jazz soundtrack.

The lavatories, with piped chamber and harpsichord music are clean though small but it's the urinals against which some may bridle. They are a pair of open women's red-lipped mouths; unsurprisingly I'm not sure that urinating into a fake woman's mouth will appeal to all.

I would come here again, especially if visiting VP, but this pub loses at least one if not two points because of the above.
