This is a Greene King pub that had on four of their ales IPA (obviously), Abbot, London Glory - and I think the fourth was OSH. I didn't look at a menu.

There's distressed aquamarine painted, modern looking, panelling on the walls, mainly bare-boarded flooring except for a modern design tiled area surrounding the bar counter, and exposed brickwork behind the servery. You get the picture. There's a large outside seating area to the left of the building, which was of course a big plus last year.

I've walked this pub numerous times in the past, and I'll probably walk past it numeous times in the future.

The George is owned by Greene King and the large single open planned L-shaped bar has definitely undergone the refurbishment treatment by the GK internal designers team and whereas it may be a bright and comfortable interior with tiled and wooden floors, plenty of light wood, the usual farrow and ball soft colour scheme, lighting and gas coal-effect fires, and copious soft furnishings strewn about the mix of sofas and standard tables its identical to every other pubco’s view of what a food led gastro interior should look like and therefore nothing you haven’t seen a 100 times before.
Although clearly food led the bar area is more set up for drinking, and I didn’t have a problem with this area having a couple of flat screens for the sport and with the current cricket world cup on it actually enhanced the appeal of this pub in my opinion. Then the rest of the pub was mainly set up for dining and then there is a small patio to the rear, which is largely for the benegit of the smokers from what I could see.
Four hand pumps on the bar and alongside the usual IPA and Abbott were two badged as Full Sail and Rhode Island, which I hadn’t seen before and were not going to trust in a GK pub. And then there were the usual shiny draft taps with all the usual suspects, but at least containing a couple of brews from Camden and Meantime.
I found it all a bit bland and typical GK eatery for me and will also concur that the Garden Gate is a better option. But this is not a bad pub and it does provide an alternative for the hardworking staff of the Royal Free, especially as NHS staff get a 10% discount here I believe.

The pub dates from 1666 but was rebuilt around the 1920s/’30 by John T. Quilter for Wm Younger’s in his trademark brewers’ Tudor. Recently refurbished - yet again - and now taken a notch or two more upmarket with the addition of edible food, though not outwardly gastro. Overly bright inside and unsurprisingly, pale wood abounds. The stinky carpet has gone as has the riff-raff that once spilled out onto the pavement. Now considerably nicer than before, though the presence of glowing TVs is an unwanted distraction.
Ales: Greene King’s IPA, Hogsback Brewery’s Surrey Nirvana, Wimbledon Brewery’s Copper Leaf and Twickenham Brewery’s Grandstand, price not recorded and in decent nick.
This pub is worth a visit if in the locale but would not have made my bucket list; the Roebuck and Garden Gate are close at hand.

£5.20 for a peroni. Couldnt see any exciting real ales on draft but they have a large collection of bottle craft ales.

OK - The only think that stopped it being instantly forgettable was the house mouse that popped out from behind the fire place several times.

If it Pink, i would have called it a night.

Roger Button left this review about The George Pub

The George is a handsome enough looking mock-Tudor building with twin gables and an enticing lure. For the most part that’s about the extent of its good points. It did have a spell as a Rat & Parrot before reverting back to its traditional name in 2004 and is now part of Punch’s resurrected Taylor Walker chain with all the PubCo blandness that goes with it

The interior appears a bit dingy with the natural light not penetrating to any great lengths. The front section has bare floors, dark paneled walls, retro wallpaper and an abundance of high bar tables. There is also a reasonably positioned darts area. The carpeted rear section is in an extension with quite low ceilings, one side of which has a 45º slope and upon which a flat screen TV is positioned at a crazy viewing angle. There are some old pictures of the local area and blackboards advertising various offers and upcoming sports. There are several TV’s and it appears that the pub is geared heavily towards sport viewing. There is a snall patio to the rear and some benches out the front on the main road.

The beers are not too exciting with 4 ales (London Pride, Youngs London Gold, Bombardier and Doom Bar) spread across 8 handpumps. Prices were pretty reasonable (London Gold is currently £2.85) but sadly quality wsn’t, especially given the pub’s Cask Marque accreditation. Food is the usual mass market chain pub stuff with main courses around £7-8 but some good lunctime specials at £3.99.

It was fairly quiet on my latest visit but I have been in here before when it was busy and service was pretty appaling with regulars getting a head start in the queue over the casual visitors.

On the whole, the pub is very ordinary and doesn’t present the visitor with anything more than an unadventurous and mundane pub experience.

A few years ago this pub changed its name back to The George after a stint as a Rat and Parrot and I have to shamefully admit that I worked here, but only lasted a week due to its terrible management. Thankfully it now seems to be run fairly well but I will admit that, like most people, my visits normally coincide with Premiership football matches due to a lack of subscription to Sky Sports in Hampstead pubs. I usually have a pleasant stay although it does get very busy when a London team is playing and the pub does suffer from a lot of people walking in off the street and packing the pub out without buying a drink or adding to the atmosphere.

The staff seem ok and are good at handling the busy bar and there were four ale options of Pride, Greene King IPA, Directors and Youngs Ordinary on my visit yesterday. There is also a standard/premium draught selection and food is served including a children’s menu and a curry night every Tuesday where the ruby of the week and a pint costs £6.85. I cannot comment on the quality of the food though as I enjoy popping into the KFC a few doors down.

There is a quiz every Monday night and I’m not sure how this affects any football that is on, maybe it is muted.

I wouldn’t go to this pub if it wasn’t for it being the football pub of the area, but this is more due to its location.
