A lovely little traditional pub, once an Ansells house but now privately-owned so unmodernised and displaying some good heritage features including tiling and woodwork. The left side has a nice old taproom, with a back room behind displaying remnants of some naff last century decoration. The other side has a good drinking area at the front, a sort of parlour room behind (with a ridiculously-placed dartboard) and a pool room at the back. To the side is a patio drinking area. The whole place has a pleasantly-aged and lived-in feel, with no modern fripperies. Happily the ale has recovered from the previous encounter and was in top form: Wye Valley HPA and Butty Bach are the regulars, with monthly special guests. Proper food was discontinued during Covid, with just rolls and pies available now. A proper old school pub and well worth visiting while it still survives.

Can only report as I find. And how, I wanted to enjoy this Good Beer Guide Pub - one of the closest to the Albion, where you can find me at every other 3pm kick off.

A 2mile walk from the ground to work up a thirst. Fine looking exterior and a tiny hall to give you the decision to go left (lounge) or right (bar). I went left and into a very traditional room, low ceiling, mock Tudor effect.

Two Cask on my side but both the Golden Glow and Butty were off - with an excuse from the near teenage staff that "they need the lines cleaning". Do you have any cask, I enquire? HPA in the other bar.

Normally, I am a big fan of HPA. It's pin sharp, crystal clear. Firstly, this was a short pint. Secondly it was murky in a way that I know HPA shouldnt be. Finally, there were bits floating around the bottom.

How can a CAMRA accredited pub serve produce so poor? If this was your first taste of real ale, you would be on Madri for life.

I would have taken it back, but a large group of other pub enthusiasts had come in and were hogging the bar, going through the "no butty" "no Golden Glow" routine.

I left my drink unfinished and returned to the Soho Tram stop. A short distance away.

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about Black Eagle

Splendid heritage pub, retaining a four-room layout around the central servery and all pleasingly traditional in appearance. Also has another dining room at the back and a suitably retro pub-grub menu. I found Bathams Bitter and Burton Bridge XL Mild (£3.00) on the pair of handpumps in the front lounge, with a further five real ales available on the other counters.

Enjoyed my visit to this friendly pub late lunchtime. I had called in for a beer but was tempted by the reasonable food on offer and enjoyed the stilton soup. There were 2 small bar areas which had a choice of real ales and larger rooms set up for dining. Chose Malvern Hills Malvern Spring which was a little cloudy but drinkable.

A mid afternoon stop on our blast round Brum and we stumbled accross the Black Eagle Beer Festival. Unfortunatly for me, it was just like home with brews from Magpie and Blue Monkey but I managed to find somthing that wasn't from Nottingham and settled down. The pub was missing a bit of a trick as it was packed and had a great bar-b-q going but nobody serving food? We ended up going inside and eating from the pub menu, which was very good. Between the 6 of us, we had a couple of steak pies, chillie, scampie and a curry, all of excellent home made standard. Well worth a trip out on the tram, will call again.

Well worth a couple of stops on the tram which was £2 each way. The place has a very country pub style and feel about it, in spite of being in a bit of an industrial part of Hockley. It consists of three small rooms with a central bar serving all three areas and a dining area to the rear which opens at 7. The pub opens at 5.30 and you can order food from opening time. The steak pie, chips and garden peas at £6.50 was excellent. Mrs Ale went for the rump steak at £8.50 and said it was one of the best steaks goin. Good few people also eating at our 5.30 visit. I sank a good few Holdens Mild, also on were Backyard Brewery Premium and Salopian Conundrum. Will defo call again.

This pub has a traditional back-street local feel to it. It's just a short walk from the Soho Benson Road stop of the Midland Metro (3 stops from the Snow Hill terminal). Don't let the slightly tired decor and furnishings put you off though.

A central bar serves 4 compact rooms. The ale board displays the regular offerings of Martson's Pedigree, Timothy Taylor Landlord, Freedom Organic Lager and Ansell's MILD. The guest ales on my visit were Sharp's Cornish Coaster, Backyard Brewhouse Kris Kringle, Batham's Best Bitter (my choice, it was up to scratch)and Burton Bridge Stairway to Heaven.

Worth a visit if you prefer the traditional pub over the more modern setting. GBG 2010 entry and current Birmingham CAMRA Pub of the Year.

Absolute gem of a pub, tucked away in old industrial Birmingham, between Hockley and Handsworth

Fantastic attention inside, and its obviously much loved by the owners. What a difference it makes when somebody cares so much.

Small but comfortable rooms with a larger dining area at the rear, its homely and a beautiful example of a back street boozer. Must be one of the best traditional pubs in Birmingham.

Numorous interesting real ales, including local ones, and my Brew Dog Trashy Blonde was superb.

As reviews below, a must!

Still as good as ever. A very popular pub in the back streets of Hockley. It is howver only a minutes walk from Soho Benson Road tram stop. Probably my favourite Birmingham boozer

Pretty much what Soup Dragon has said. I enjoyed my time at Black Eagle and Old landlady is very pleasant. Quite long way from Hockley centre but worth it for just for decors.
