This was a Charrington’s pub dating from 1869, but I suspect that it must have been rebuilt and in the brewers’ Tudor style too, exhibiting a Truman’s lantern to the exterior’s right side. The interior is incredibly narrow and stretches back a long way; I suspect that the left of the building was once part of the pub as it’s variously shown as a bedding shop. The floor is modern boarded, the traditional bar is to the left, then there’s black exposed rafters with a white Artex ceiling. Thereafter there’s much threequarters height dark wood panelling; lighting comes in large part from Tiffany-style sconces, furniture being traditional along with some pews. What does come as a real surprise is the unbelievable quantity of eclectic knickknacks on view, a rival to Belgravia’s Nag’s Head, along with framed prints; a real time warp of a pub, which, according to the pub's Facebook page, would seem to have a lovely beer garden. Customers seemed to be local but nothing like the locals at the Albert, few in number and glued to the football on an unobtrusive TV to the rear.
Sadly, there’s no real ale here, me opting for a half of Truman’s keg Pale at a rather alarming £3.00, served by probably the most uncommunicative and reluctant landlord I’ve ever encountered. However, a very local middle-aged couple arrived and were greeted warmly, so clearly service takes on a different complexion if one’s a face.
This was a real unexpected find, a far cry from the awful Albert across the road. With a decent selection of real ales, this could be a real Tower Hamlets destination pub, but as things stand, it’s certainly worthy of inclusion on a crawl.

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about Young Prince

Probably the most inviting building in an otherwise dull row of shops. Surprisingly traditional interior within the narrow but elongated bar. Quite a pleasant, if a bit run down, compact patio beer garden to the rear. One disused handpump but the landlord does normally have Truman's Swift served directly from one of two casks on the counter. Unfortunately, these had run out when I visited so I opted for the keg Truman's Pale (£4.10) instead.
