First pint on a crawl round Peterborough and probably the best of the day. My JHB was absolutely perfect, despite being pulled just 3 minutes after the 12:30 opening on a Saturday. Nice and quiet on our visit, just a handful of locals by the time we left at around 1pm.

Last pub pub of the crawl (other then the hotel next to the station) and what a pub this was. Excellent real ales (I had Oblivion), good service and a well laid out interior. Definitely worth a revisit.

We called in on a Saturday afternoon, were the pub was moderately busy, with a few drinkers and diners enjoying the Thai cuisine. Five Oakham ales and one guest on our visit. I thought the Oakham Citra was top class and a refreshing way to end the days crawl. The service in here was excellent and prices were very reasonable. This pub is well worth a visit.

I've been meaning to come here for years and wasn't disappointed, it's miles better than that restaurant place back in London. You enter into a large room with the bar on the left and a raised area at the back. On my Saturday evening visit it looked like it was gearing up for a late noisy night.
I didn't have time to note all the beers but thought there were just four Oakham Ales (Inferno, JHB, Bishop's Farewell & Citra) plus a couple of Grainstore beers. I went for the Citra (£2.60) which was outstanding and a very good price. It's not a very attractive building but who cares about that when there is superb quality cheap beer. I would have stayed for another if I had known my train was going to be half hour late.

John Bonser left this review about The Brewery Tap

Date of visit - April 2013.

It’s a large stand alone 1930’s building pretty close to the station and was formerly an employment exchange. Despite its central location and the Westgate address, it feels slightly isolated at the end of the street and opposite a large ugly multi storey car park.

The interior is large and spacious, featuring a flagstoned floor, some exposed brickwork, with a number of different areas and the usual mix of sofas and more conventional seating aimed at diners. It’s a pleasant enough interior, but with something of that impersonal chain pub feel, enhanced by the usual black shirted foreign bar staff.

In one corner, behind a tall glass screen is a brew plant, which brews special one off beers for Oakham Brewery. According to the CAMRA Good Beer Guide, its reputed to be the largest brewpub in Europe.

Thai food is served and there’s a further balcony restaurant area upstairs although, on my visit, most customers seemed to be eating downstairs.

A separate room – The Tap Room – serves as a music venue with Open Mic nights, Saturday night DJ’s and rock bands featuring most Fri – Sun nights.

Twelve handpumps serve a good variety of real ales, mainly Oakham beers, but also guests from other local breweries which included Elgoods Black Dog on my visit.

All beers sampled ( JHB, Hare and Hedgehog) and the Elgoods Black Dog were in good form. The pub is a CAMRA Good Beer Guide regular.

Worth seeking out when in town

This pub appears in the 2012 Good Beer Guide and is well described below. It had the full tange of Oakham Ales across about 12 handpulls, but only 1 guest which I found disappointing. The guest was a beer brewed by Green Jack brewery on the Oakham plant too, so all beers really brewed at Oakham. No problem with beer quality and we had the Oakham Green Devil IPA 6% and the Green Jack Pale Ale 3.6%. Impressed by the Thai menu, so we ordered from the lunchtime menu and ate in the dining area downstairs. Generous portions for £5.99 and the meals were good.

If you like real ales especially Oakham's this is the place to go when in Peterborough. Most of the Oakham range were on sale along with a couple of guests and all of the Oakham beers that I tried were in top form.About 5 mins from the railway station and a good job it is too.

The Brewery Tap is the home of the fabulous Oakham brewery and as such, proudly proclaims itself to be Europe's largest brew-pub. The interior is a very modern looking mix of wood, bare brick, glass and steel with a partly flagstone, partly wooden, floor. Although such modern design is usually anathema to the pub traditionalist, this felt entirely removed from the bland, pub-co vision of the modern pub and I felt very much at home drinking here. One of the highlights of the design must be the glass wall to the tap room which allows you to idly watch the brewing process as you sample the fruits of their labour. There was all sorts of activity going on whilst I was there, which was quite fun to follow. There was a large TV screen and a rolled up projector screen in the main room, presumably to provide entertainment once the brewer's have left for the day. Music was also playing in the background.
The pub is on two levels, with a very large lower floor offering some tempting looking sofas as well as plenty of standard tables and chairs. Upstairs is a glass fronted Thai restaurant with lots of bamboo decorations. The menu, which can be sampled downstairs as well, has most main meals at around the £7-9 mark. I had a Thai Green Curry which was very nice and came in a good sized portion. The menu talks about trying to combine the food with the beers they make and I thought my pint went well with the curry.
The long, curved bar counter offered Oakham JHB, Inferno (£2.75), Bishop's Farewell, White Dwarf and Citra as well as having an impressive bottled range displayed on the shelves of the grand bar back. In addition to this, there were guest ales in the shape of Everards Tiger, Elgoods Black Dog and one other which I think was Milestone's Rich Ruby. The beer quality was absolutely top drawer as you would hope.
There were certificates everywhere you look in this place, both for the pub and for the beer. As far as I'm concerned, they are well deserved, as this is a top quality pub serving top quality beer in a very interesting environment. I highly rate this place and if I could only visit one pub the next time I'm in Peterborough, it would be this one.

Oakham JHB, Bishops Farewell (went just after opening!), Attila (7.5), White Dwarf, Inferno, Oblivion, Darkstar Festival, Wolf Wolf, & Wolf in Sheeps Clothing, Elgoods Black Dog, Westons Bounds Brand Scrumpy. Large paved bar area, gives on to wood flooring, black/white tiles around bar, open upper tier, old copper brewing vats visible to the rear, partially hidden by drop down screen (nothing on - roll it up…), didn't previously realise they have a smaller rear room for functions/ comedy nights. Doesn't feel overly pubby to me, but that's a good beer line up. We arrived in Peterborough before midday so had to wait a few mins for the noon opening. Young friendly staff. Was busying up with younger (but not problematic) clientele when we dropped back in later on return to station.

Seemed a decent pub, very large with two levels of seating, a few beers on tap and some decent cider.
Quite busy for a Tuesday night.
