Old Boots left this review about The Water House (JD Wetherspoon)

Rambling spoons over three levels, counter near the back to the left. Usual layout, the dross is on the furthest bank of five pulls but only Doombar looked to be running there, on the other bank three were in use, one just went off as I got there the other had a clip saying we’re proud to support CAMRA. Not a lot to say, beer was average, it was much better in the Bishops Mill and the staff, at both actually, were much better than average.

A town centre 'Spoons wedged into some old buildings, which creates a rather confused interior, including a raised level to one side. Usual Wetherspoon offerings, although the beer range did include some interesting local ales. Rather too cramped and busy to be a destination pub, but handy for the shops and especially for the bus station opposite.

This is a smaller Spoons especially for a city centre. As noted several times below it's split into various areas on different levels. I did notice that the food clubs here are cheaper, Steak Club £6.35 and Chicken Club £6.10. Both include a pint of any real ale. As it was Wednesday I went for the Chicken Club.
The bar is at the back on the left and has ten hand pumps which had two ciders, the JDW Trio Of Doom, Maxim Maximus & Azacca Pale, Yard Of Ale Hellcat Blonde, Shepherd Neame Redpoint Disco Macaw and Sonnet 43 Aurora. I had a Hellcat Blonde, Maximus and a few days later an excellent Kelham Island Pale Rider. All were £1.99.
I thought this was a decent Spoons especially for a city centre one.

Must have hit this place at the wrong time (half five on a Wednesday) as the clientele were somewhat insalubrious. A quick half and on my way.

The Water House is a Weterspoons pub that is a short walk from the train station.
I got in here well before 11am and found the pub to be very busy, the room is oblong shaped and runs to the rear, there are areas either side of the entrance which have normal tables and chairs, the left side had a real fire on the go,the bar is on the mid left side, there are as usual tall tables and chairs opposite the bar.
There is an area to the rear right which is up a few steps.
There were a few guest beers on the bar plus the Spoons regulars,i had a drink of Elgoods Lazy Dog which went down well after a long journey up here from Nottingham, the other beers noted were one from Brains brewery,Acorn barnsley bitter,O Hara's JDW irish amd Ruddles best.
I was happy enough having a drink in this Spoons,my first ever pub done in the North East area of England.

Odd little JDW with an almost quasi-Scandi feel inside - clean lines and light brown varnished wood. Housed in the former water board office building, it's set over three levels and the mezzanine affords a fair view over the bar. Lack of natural light inside will put off some. Ten pumps but some of the guests had the dreaded ‘coming soon’ sign affixed (at least there was a sign…). My Rudgate Jorvick was in pretty good form and just a quid for a half too. So-so Spoons overall on this showing.

Apparently this JDW is housed in what was the offices of the local water board, but I failed to notice any preserved features to that effect although I could have been wrong. It seemed like a pretty formulaic spoons to me, as usual, lacking in natural light. There is an upper mezzanine to the rear, and décor included a few abstract prints of iconic local scenes, the cathedral, castle and viaducts.
This was my obligatory breakfast stop, by 10.15 there were a serious number of the all-dayer brigade in place, one guy was already on the pint plus chaser.
A decent enough if standard breakfast, not too many guest beers but I enjoyed a decent enough pint of Black Paw Paw's Gold for £1.49 after using my CAMRA voucher. There's not many places you can get a full breakfast and a pint for under a fiver.
Unusually for a 'spoons they have a weekly quiz here plus Mexican Monday to add to the other "nights" which I don't recall seeing previously anywhere else.

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about The Water House (JD Wetherspoon)

A pub of two halves - an imposing facade and front rooms, but much remodelled further back with seating areas up and down half flights of stairs. Ten handpumps, with a reasonable selection of beers including Cullercoats Jack the Devil (£1.75).

This Spoons looks great from the outside. However, the interior has well and truly had it's day as the place is scruffy. We sat at the front and I noticed that the upholstered chairs were filthy and walls grubby. My arm was sticking to the table as it hadn't been wiped for a good few hours. I stuck it out and finished my beer, as it was from the Northumberland Brewery, which is one of my favourite breweries. Hopefully the next time I call the place will be refurbed.

Gill Smith left this review about The Water House (JD Wetherspoon)

This wasn't a bad Wetherspoons, and the coal effect fires make it more welcoming than most, and it does feature in the 2012 Good Beer Guide. The latest beer festival was in full flow, but there was prompt service and a good selection of ales available. Not far from the bus station and within the main shopping shopping area it is worth including on any pub crawls of the city.
