Will Larter left this review about The Half Moon Inn

I didn't take detailed notes of my visit, for a reason that will become clear, so I refer anyone interested in the physical attributes of the pub to previous reviewers. There are four nationally known brands on the hand pumps, with Wainwright, Bass, Landlord and Doom Bar at the time of my visit. I went for the Bass, but a quick tug at the pull showed that the barrel had run dry, so I went for Landlord, which was fine, but my days of being impressed by this beer are long gone. As I sat down at a table near the front window I noticed that the man sitting at the next table was the same man who had fallen asleep in the Swan & Three Cygnets 15 minutes earlier. I noticed he had a fairly cloudy beer in front of him, so I took the opportunity of our recent acquaintance to ask him whether that was Bass he had there. He confirmed it was, so I suggested he should get it changed, as a fresh barrel was being pulled through. He declined, saying that the beer was all right. I can think of several pubs I have been in where the barman or licensee would have been over like a flash to replace his beer, as they must have known who they had served the last pint to. Their failure to properly look after their customer left a bad taste in my mouth, though evidently not in his.

In the quarter century at least I have known this pub it remains pretty much unchanged and one of the best in the city, other of course than the beer range changing and it’s still probably my favourite Durham pub. Once the best place for Draught Bass it still holds its own beer wise although Taylor’s Landlord being the replacement for Bass doesn’t quite match up to Bass’s glory days. There are three big screens all showing different sports in the main street level bar. A classic.

This old, traditional city centre hostelry has a crescent shaped room around the bar. It was fairly quiet on my Thursday afternoon visit, with the barman looking fairly bored. Live women's golf was on the TV, but nobody seemed remotely interested.

4 real ales were on offer - Landlord, Bass, Doom Bar & Tribute, not the varied selection I would have expected for a pub in the 2022 Good Beer Guide.

Comfortable and cosy city centre pub. The kind of place you might take somebody on a date. Not really for me though.

Traditional city centre pub - which is fine inside - with a front bar and rear lounge, separated by the "Half MoonW Bar.

Its the river side terrace that makes this place stand out - spacious, with covers, outdoor TVs and great views over the old Elvet Bridge.

Oh, and the TT Landlord was exceptional.

A good traditional town pub with some fine bar furnishings, although with a fairly well-worn feel. The front bar appeared well-used by the locals, with a quieter lounge down a couple of steps. At the back there is a courtyard area overlooking the river, although this was shut off in the winter. The Durham White Gold was the best of a reasonable range of beers and in good order (Cask Marque listing).

The Half moon is a decent looking pub that is situated close to a busy road junction.
Once inside there is an L shaped room to the front with the bar facing, the room is bare boarded, the seating is comfy bench type and small stools, there are TVs either side of the room one showing Rugby and the other showing Cricket, there is a lounge room to the rear which is down a few steps, this room is carpeted and has comfy bench seating.
There were four real ales on the bar,i had a drink of Durham White Gold which went down very well, the other beers were Bass,Taylor Landlord and GK IPA.
A very pleasant pub to have a drink in.

Attractive façade with some nice wall tiling. Inside on entering is a fairly basic L shaped boozer, with a dark wood curved bar, maroon and gold painted bar back upper, wooden flooring and a nice row of red leather banquette seating. Two TVs, one tuned to 24 hour news, the other Sky Sports News. Down a couple of steps to a traditional lounge area; darker in here with a large curved leather banquette and lovely old stained glass windows. A door leads to an alleyway beer courtyard with river and bridge views. Already fairly busy just before midday with a mature clientèle. Five pumps drawing GK IPA, Bass, Tim Taylor x2 and Durham White Gold. My half of the Durham was in good shape. Enjoyable place.

Bit of a basic pub and the young service is not as thorough as could be, but its ok

Beer quality needs a little improvement

A split level town pub with the bar and rooms stepping down as the ground dips to the river bank. Generally regular traditional seating at banquettes and stools but also with a few curious looking small tables along wall, the boarded floor is stained dark brown. The ornate bar gantry has a gilded raised pattern that frankly does look a bit naff, the cream, possibly once white, ceiling is timber boarded.
The lower room, towards the river, had red banquettes and a couple of Bass mirrors. Beyond here is a riverside courtyard which would be nice if the weather was.
Four on, Draught Bass, Woodforde's Norfolk Champion, Dunham Brewery White Gold (lovely) and Landlord. A few clips behind the bar suggest some rotation. Not sure if food is served, it was about 5pm when I was in, a TV had some tennis on, another the test cricket, thankfully the tennis was muted.
Another one of those friendly type of pubs where as you sit down you are included. I finished up chatting to a few blokes about football and beer, thoroughly enjoyable.
