I missed doing a revisit here on my Shropshire cycling tour in 2014, due to road works between here and Clun where I was staying, so I made a point of approaching from a different direction on this year's tour, just in case. I was glad I did, because it was at the Crown that I found my beer of the week: Hobsons Best. Now some might say what's so special about Hobson's Best, and I must agree that I'd had several of the same brew and many others like it from other breweries while in the area. But this one was excellent to the point of being in a different class. I was only going to have a half, but it was so good I had another. That's the only downside to cycling, beer-wise - drinking only halves and limited to one per stop. Luckily I was only two miles from my destination so was able to treat myself. The landlord and his half-dozen late afternoon customers were friendly and welcoming and I had no trouble at all in giving the pub an extra point compared with my review of 2013. Now looking forward to my next visit.

This is an old fashioned village inn with two rooms at the front for diners and tourists, and a public bar at the back for locals. I happened to call in just as the evening rush was subsiding - it was fish & chips night - and someone before me at the bar was paying for the food he had just eaten and sending his compliments to the cook. (Paying after you've eaten - what a refreshing change!)

A magnificent stone fireplace has pride of place next to the bar, where there are four hand pumps. Beers available on my visit were Stonehouse Station Bitter and Hobsons Best Bitter. I had the Stonehouse, which was also a best bitter and just the sort of beer I like. It was in excellent condition and only £2.60 a pint. The Clun valley is a delightful place but we can't all live there; the fantasy solution would be to encapsulate this pub and set it up wherever you happen to be for the night.

Really enjoyed my visit here, manager very friendly and locals alike - had great conversation. This pub has great character and also well kept ales. I would like to try the food on my next visit, as it has a great reputation. Will call again.
