A better-than-average village pub with a GBG entry in a pleasant Victorian roadside house. There is a small car park opposite and a garden at the back. Inside, the single conjoined bar is part carpeted, part wooden floored. It's well decorated, and the staff are pleasant albeit a bit slow. The clientele is mixed, representing a good cross-section of the village. Dogs are welcome and plentiful. There are several tables for diners, trying to reflect a bistro style, but still remaining a pub despite delivering food on old slates and bits of driftwood. Service was very slow, but the food was good, so there may be scope for improvement in kitchen processes. Two ales – fff Moondance and Fork Handles – and a cider on. The cider, Symonds, was a bit disappointing, but the Moondance was in excellent condition. Well worth deviating from the A31 to find.

The only pub in the small and quiet village of Bentley, the next nearest pub would I guess be a good 20 min walk away. The Star balances a food interest quite well with a locals pub.Smart and clean in appearance with a main bar area upon entry complete with bar stools for those just after drinks, but plenty of seating and tables for drinking and or food.Pleasant and attentive bar staff, Five hand pumps for ale although on my Monday morning visit only three beers were on, Courage Best, Doom Bar and thankfully Triple fff Moondance which given 10 minutes to warm to a better temperature was quite a decent pint, there is a basic range of keg stuff covering all bases. A functional village pub in a place I would not normally need to be ,but if I was would not have a problem calling in again.
