The pub seems largely unchanged but I want to give a mention to the bar manager who has pushed to improve the Thwaites range on the hand pumps in the winter months by serving Keswick Thirst Noel 6%, an eye-catching addition and very welcome in my opinion.

A change of name has worked wonders for this pub, or perhaps I was just less irritated than on my previous visit (see below). My impression is that the furniture has either changed or is laid out more sympathetically; perhaps aesthetically is the word I'm looking for. As I relaxed with my half of Thwaites Hygge (see photos for full beer range, including local guest), I was able to look around me and spotted a hitherto unsuspected snug, up a couple of steps to the right rear of the bar, with possibly original wood panelling. Looking more closely at the bar, it seemed to be also perhaps original, with fielded wood panelling and a wooden rail, albeit painted in a modern shade of greygreen. Maybe it was something in the beer that was invoking the Danish concept of feelgoodness after which it is named, but whatever the cause I felt distinctly inclined to award the pub a perhaps generous 7, rather than the slightly damning 5 from five years before.

Decent range of beer in a very nice bar area. Food looked wondeful. We also stayed here for the night and it was a great experience.

Thwaites Lancaster Bomber in good nick.

Formerly the Keswick Lodge, now given some marketing man's idea of a really good name for a pub ... not. This is a Thwaites house at the top of the pedestrianised area in the centre of town. Entry is via a tiled lobby with a dining room to the left and another area with tables crowded together haphazardly to the right. This is an awkward room, with a feel more like a tea room than a pub.

The bar is through the lobby to the rear, with a small table or two and standing room for drinkers. The five hand pumps all hand Thwaites beers on, though there's a sign outside that suggests they also have guest ales. Also on the outside wall is an offer to barter beer tokens for local produce, which is an interesting idea.

This was a difficult pub for me to feel comfortable in, with stressed-out Christmas shoppers and the too-loud-to-ignore piped music adding to the uncongenial seating arrangements, so that I felt that drink-up-and-go was my best bet.
