A nice looking pub on a steep hill, but inside it's totally anonymous. Opened out and stripped of any character, and with several TV screens on the walls, this could be any town centre pub anywhere in the country. On the bar are two hand pumps displaying different pump clips, but they are two versions of Sharps Doom Bar's pump clip, not two beers. Having popped in to use the toilet I felt it would be rude not to have a beer, and fortunately my half was in reasonably good condition. And at less than £3 a pint it was good value, but that wouldn't be enough to get me across the threshold next time I'm in Durham.

Old Boots left this review about Fighting Cocks

Older pub modernised in a faux traditional style with tongue & groove, albeit in grey, cream walls with old Durham photos and board floors. Two pulls but only an average Landlord on, otherwise three T-bars of standard kegs. Vestigial walls and varying floor levels show were its old rooms once were and there’s a more secluded rear area mostly for eating. Food led as the heady scent of frying and vinegar will alert you on entering.

The Fighting Cocks is situated on a steep hill just off the main shopping area.
Once inside there is a single room which runs to the rear, the seating is bench seating and and chairs plus normal tables and chairs to the front, the bar is on the left side, there is a small raised area to the rear left which has normal tables and chairs.
There was one real ale on the bar which was Bombardier, this was a decent enough drink.
There was background music playing which was decent.
I was happy enough having a drink in this pub.

The embossed fighting cocks on the exterior wall are this pub’s best feature. Inside is a fairly characterless room, which has seen better days and felt a bit grubby. Just TT Landlord on which in fairness was pretty good. Looks content to trade on the less picky students and never-ending stream of hen parties. Doesn’t even come under the ‘decent for a swift pint before the train’ category.

Looked in twice over the few days I had in town, despite two handpumps there was no ale on either time and a perceived indifference. Shame as the pub is in a prominent location.

Large open plan pub that obviously used to be several rooms. Mainly set up for dining and majors on food a lunchtimes. There's a quiz machine to the right as you enter. Long bar also on the right which only has one handpump. The beer is usually something unimaginitive like Bombardier or Deuchars, but it's pretty well kept. I've been in a lot worse places.
