The Volunteer Hotel is a Holts pub with a bar facing the entrance that supports four handpumps that were drawing Bitter and Mild during a recent midweek visit. To the right of the entrance are pool and dart areas, both with banquette seating. There is seating in the window to the left of the entrance and some raised seating can be found further left. Televisions are located throughout and football was playing. I found the service to be polite and the pub comfortable.

This large grade II listed Victorian pub has at some time past been opened out into one main area but with a feel of a degree of separation. Likely to have been a five or more roomer at one time, now we find the bar on the back wall opposite the entrance, to the right is a games area with a pair of dartboards and a pool table while to the left a slightly raised area looks to be the preferred dining zone. Some leaded stained glass remains. Darts must feature highly here, there are several trophies of significant size on shelves. Carpeted main area, lino and boarded to the right, mid afternoon found a half dozen or so blokes chatting around the bar and watching the horse racing while a few others ate the unbelievably priced food, ham, egg and chips was £2.50, baked potatoes started from £1 and increased dizzily to all of £1.50. Beers are from Holts, like a return to my formative drinking days with just mild and bitter, bitter was £2.56.
As a historical side note this remains as far as I can recall the only pub I have ever been barred from, back in around 1981, for having the temerity to return a bad pint. It was a Whitbread pub back then. Thankfully attitudes seem to have changed for the better since.

A very ornate looking pub. A Holts pub which is open plan inside with various areas to sit. A raised area is to the left with a pool table to the right. A clean comfortable place it is a pleasant pub to pass some time in. 4 handpumps on the bar but only Holts Bitter and Mild on them.

This is my "work local" as I work at Cap Gemini just behind the pub. We often call in for a BLT and a pint on a Friday. It used to be more often, but having a pint at lunchtime is frowned upon now. It's one large room with a raised area to the left. It's a typical Holts roadhouse, brick built and ornate, although it doesn't have the tiling of many other Holts pubs. Usually only has Holts Mild & Bitter available, although there's sometimes a seasonal available. It's a good pint as well. The food is basic, but good quality. You could do a lot worse than stop here for a pint and a bite to eat.

The Volunteer is a large grand looking pub that is on the very busy cross street and it is just off the town centre.
This pub was very nice inside with carpets and comfortable seating, the pub had been opened out but still had different drinking areas.
This pub is a Joseph Holt tied house and there were two real ales on the bar i had a drink of Holts bitter and this was a really nice drink and also quite cheap the other beer was Holts mild.
I quite liked this pub and would have happily stayed longer if i was'nt on a pub crawl.
