A flying revisit, though I have dropped in a couple of times since the last review. The pub now finds itself the GBG and my Redemption Magnus was fine (NBSS 3). Can get terrifyingly busy despite its substantial size but service is prompt.

A Wetherlodge that is handily situated a stones throw from New Street and is pretty much next door to the Wellington, one of Britain’s premier alehouses. Classic Spoon style, a large single room with the servery running along the left hand side. As mentioned below, there are some Art Deco stylings which always please this particular reviewer. Bit of a mixed bag on my visit - the food was good but I had to take back a beer that was completely flat and out of condition which proved somewhat difficult as the yoof behind the bar had it in his head that it was probably the sparkler (at least he’d heard of them I suppose). My eventual replacement from elsewhere on the bar was drinkable enough. Some of the tables remained uncleared but I did get asked by a friendly female staff member who was passing of my food was ok which doesn’t happen often. The Figure of Eight is the better central Brum JDW. Rated 6

I too rate this as the best of a pretty poor bunch of Wetherspoon branches in Birmingham. Having been in the Wellington the night before until rather late, I returned to the same street for a breakfast in the Briar Rose the following morning, having failed to get up in time for breakfast in the hotel!

Nursing a minor hangover, I devoured the breakfast, which was typical of most 'spoon's breakfasts I've had - consistently good food, apart from a rock hard fried egg. The beer choice to go with it was Greene King Abbot, Ruddles Best, Sharp's Doom Bar or Lymestone Cherry Stone, Stone The Crows & Tamaishi. Weston's Old Rosie was the cider. I opted for a pint of Stone The Crows to wash it down.

Service was swift and efficient. High ceilings make it quite noisy in here, especially if there are some loud people about. There was one rather loud woman behind boasting about her holidays, which could be heard by most people inside. Nevertheless, the art deco theme does give this place a little character that other branches lack.

My pick of the Birmingham Spoons. I rather liked the art deco feel of the tiger print bar front and the chandeliers.

Cairngorm Wild Cat ESB Bitter in perfect nick at £2.57 is a steal.

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about The Briar Rose (JD Wetherspoon)

Big, busy 'spoons, usually with plenty of choice from the two banks of five handpumps ranged along the lengthy bar, but with a reduced Covid-era range on this visit. I wasn't going to start the day with a 7.0% Abominable Snowman from Lymestone, so the Print Works Helvetica (£1.99) proved a decent alternative to the usual trio of Ruddles, Doom Bar and Abbot. Not sure about staying in the hotel rooms above, though, as it seems pretty noisy when I have stopped by in the evening.

A Wetherspoons hotel, but with a very standard interior and not that huge. The plastic screens around the bar make it feel cramped and although it was popular with folk getting food, the pub itself is rather anonymous. The ale selection was doubled up on both sets of handpumps meaning on my trip regulars in GK Ruddles Best,Abbot and Doom Bar with just two guests Lymestone Abdominal Stoneman and Print Work Helvetica (NBSS 3).
Functional but there are far better ale outlets very close by.

Large and usually busy Wetherspoons in the original Abbey National building, in one long room with the hotel part to one side. Pretty reliable to find a good selection of guest ales on and condition is usually fine. Even the food portions are up to spec. It won't win many prizes but it does what it says on the tin.

Not a bad spoons this. Gets really busy as it is close to New Street and it is a hotel. Always a decent choice of beers on with 6 guests from the current festival on my last visit. The 2 we tried were in good shape.

Wethers-by-numbers territory here. Not good, not bad.
