You will get good exercise walking around here as it's so big. You get a lot of office workers here after work, what with their laptops, talking shop and sipping wine! A good range of ales here, asked for a couple of tasters, which they didn't mind obliging, settled on Brakspeare and Jennings Cocker Hoop - will call again.

A Marston's pub/eatery with a fantastic part neo-classical stone exterior and lobby area, as it once was the National and Provincial Bank, later in the 1980s being a NatWest.

The interior is also impressive. It is open plan, with a few raised areas, with columns, pilasters, Egyptian statues, painted murals and moulded ceiling. The decor colours are difficult to tell, light green/cream, and or white, with some wood panel, as I found the place gloomy and poorly lit. There were plenty of paintings and drawings on the walls, but the cheapy food, the functional service and the silent TVs all gave a Spoons like impression - it even had a library area - a now common Spoons feature. The background music was charty. The clientele was mixed.

Beer; tap stuff, with Peroni. Marston's Peddy, EPA, Jennings Cockerhoop, Banks's Bitter, Brakspeare Bitter and a flat Wychwood Hobgoblin on handpull.

An impressive exterior, gives way to what seems like a Spoons kind of foody interior and my beer wasn't the best. Can't see myself wanting to return.

Great place to take a lady at the start of a date (although I agree with the comments about the furniture now starting to get a touch tatty).

Can be fairly busy immediately after work during the week, quiet all the rest of the time, and seemingly closed more often than one would expect, not entirely convinced they open at all on sundays ?)

For drinking go to either the Wellington (real ales) or Briar Rose (JDW) on the same street.
The Wellington was nasty before the smoking ban, now good for real ales - for ciders (and prices) the JDW pub is better.

A large open plan ex-bank building. This is a Victorian/Edwardian edifice that is simply amazing inside. The decoration is superb. It is all pillars and painting and sculpture that is contemporary with the building.

On a quiet day, I can imagine that this place would appear quite soulless. But on the days I have been in here it has been lively and friendly.

I watched England get dumped out of the World Cup by Germany in here, and the atmosphere remained friendly and good natured. The bar staff had to be torn from the big screen to serve, but who cares? It added to the atmosphere.

There were four real ales on, Hobgoblin, Banks's Bitter, Brakspear Bitter and Pedigree. I tried all except the Pedigree, because I personally don't like Pedigree. All were fine and well kept. I also did not notice any 'tattyness' to the place. Just a pub full of people enjoying themselves.

I did not eat here, but the food looked and smelled palatable.

I would definitely come here again. I really have no problems with this place, and have never had a bad pint.

Looks nice outside and inside but don't let it fooled you. Drinks always in poor nick every time I visit Bennetts. Due to huge size, I always feel emptiness and soulless. Beware of long winding route to Gents! Go to The Wellington which is almost opposite and far superior drinks.

This should be a nice pub, but it feels, I don't know, a little insecure, not quite loved, a bit of a large conversion that is a bit too big for the owners or manager. The Joint Stock is much better, but its ok. Sept 09

Another visit just before Christmas and things are getting worse here. The furniture is damaged and tatty, the corridor and toilets are in much need of some tlc. The real ale range was down to either Jennings Cockerhoop or Hobgoblin, and it wasn't well kept. Like the Hill down the road it needs much better management - Dec 2009

Converted bank but escaped being obtained by Weatherspoons. Nice interior though the beer is indifferent. Place to go for a quiet drink & read of your book. On street parking if you can find any.
