2017 Good beer guide entry - deservedly so. Good beers on, I went for a first Gold Wing.
After 13 miles walking and up since 4am, this remained the last pint of the day. Normally, I would have stayed for more.

The Riverside Bar at the Scafell Hotel, like a lot of public bars in Lake District Hotels, is tucked away at the side of the building as though they're ashamed of having such a low feature as a public bar. Though I'm sure that's a false impression, especially in this case as the bar is one of the best for many miles around. There are six hand pumps and when I was here in the quiet pre-Christmas period five of them were available: Jennings Bitter and Cumberland Ale, Theakstons Old Peculier, local Keswick Thirst Noel and Copper Dragon Best Bitter. There's a coal fire providing very welcome warmth, above which is the roll of honour of the Borrowdale Fell Race. There are cast iron tables and chairs and there is also a small outside drinking area next to the river (actually it's more like a beck, but it roars past the windows in quite a grand fashion).
