Good looking old building opposite the impressive church, this pub is owned by Brunning & Price and is very popular with diners. However locals and drinkers are well served in a back area delineated by quarry tiling, with some bar stools,a circular table and some bench seating by a fireplace. This area gets busy and is dog friendly and has a real pub atmosphere where chat rules the day.To the front of the pub tables are set for diners and may have reserved signs, the two sided bar also serves another dining section ,while to the rear of the building is a large restaurant.
All internal decoration is very traditional and there are original features dotted about.Photos on the walls are of the local area, some of days long passed but the picture of a estuary side lido in Southend raised questions of what's the connection to this village in deepest Cheshire.
The food is good with pricing at a premium but not over the top.Last orders 8.30pm.
At the bar there will be a regular Brunning & Price Bitter (brewed by Phoenix) together with on my trip Facers DHB (ho hum) ,Weetwood Bitter,Merlin's Excalabur and a very good The Wizard, which saved the visit from an ale point of view.Locales are popular here with all beer mileage noted on the blackboard above the bar.
It's a stiff walk from the Shropshire Union Canal but don't be put off by fears of gastroisation, there is a decent pub here waiting to be discovered.
