The Cat & Wheel is a decent sized blue painted pub that is on the busy Cheltenham Raoad.
Once inside the pub has two separate room with a bar on the right side and lounge to the left,i ordered my drink in the bar room which was pretty much devoid of any comfortable seating, there was a pool table and a few tall stools, the lounge is much more comfortable with comfy bench seating running down the left side and small stools, there was a large screen to the rear which was showing the start of a Rugby match.
There were four real ales on the bar,i had a drink of Deuchars IPA which went down well, the other beers were Theakston XB,St Austell Tribute and Doom Bar.
The pub was empty when i first got in on a pre 12 Saturday dinner but soon filled up with a large gang of blokes who came in to watch the rugby.
I found this to be a decent pub to have a drink in.

A traditional old pub just next to the arches, this has had a bit of a spruce up as far as I recall from my previous visit, although that was a few years ago. The pub is divided in to two with the lounge bar to the left and the public bar to the right. Both bars have doors out in to the garden which seemed to be a popular spot with it’s covered and heated seating.

The lounge bar is a long room with wood flooring and burgundy paintwork on the walls, along with several old black and white photographs of the local area. A curved, wood panelled bar counter is on the right and a large plasma is mounted up in the back corner, although this was not in use on our visit. Seating was some type of grey vinyl benches all around the perimeter with small bar stools elsewhere. An old tiled fire-place was opposite the bar, there were old beer bottles up on shelves and a number of disco type lights were on the ceiling. The public bar to the right is a little more sports orientated, with a couple more TV’s that were in use, a pool table, darts board and table football game as well as the usual fruit and quiz machines. A large mural was painted on one wall.

Service at the bar was a bit hit and miss, on several occasions there was nobody about although this may have been because they were serving in the other bar. To start with, it all seemed very pleasant and much better than I recalled. Then someone approached with a large speaker and mounted it on a wall bracket just next to us, and proceeded to clamber around the seating trailing cables behind us. It soon became evident that was in preparation for karaoke, so we made our excuses and left at this point.

Beers on tap were Bombardier, Doom Bar, Tribute and Caledonian Autumn Red. Ciders were Stowford Press, Thatcher’s Gold, Blackthorn and Black Rat dispensed from a barrel sat on the end of the bar.

Doesn’t look overly alluring from the outside but I ventured in and had a good pint of Moles (two others on, Butcombe I think plus maybe Bass?). Also a real cider (Black Rat). The interior is a bit dark and grubby, could do with a light spruce-up. Clientele seemed to be an easy-going mixture of locals and students. Darts, pool, table football and sports TV available.

Not bad, would use it if local but not likely to specifically entice me out of the town centre.
