Very nice Spoons in a less than promising area. Best described as a two-tiered Bavarian Lodge feel inside with plenty of nooks and crannies throughout; you’d never guess it was a former cop shop. Notably clean and orderly with well-drilled staff and relaxed punters – if you could cross Spoons with Sam Smiths this would be the lovechild. A fair set of guest ales and my Abbot Reserve was really good (NBSS 4) and at £2.16 once the Timbo Token was applied it was so good I stayed for more and a bit of grub. One of the best Wethers I’ve been to in a long while and I would genuinely make the effort to do this one again. If all Spoons were this well-heeled they’d have a much better rep. Unlike it's sister pub in Romford, this one fully deserves its GBG'24 listing. 8.5

I’d heard that this pub was a good conversion of a former police station, but I wasn’t prepared for quite how impressive this remarkable suburban Wetherspoons would be. The pub is roughly a five minute walk from the station and has something approximating an I-shape interior, with a wide entrance space incorporating a good amount of mixed seating under front windows, before the room then narrows a touch as it passes the servery. The bar is down the left hand wall and has a very nice pillared, dark wood counter front and matching bar back. Opposite, limited high stool and table seating competes with slot machines in what must be the least appealing part of the pub. To rear, the room widens again, opening out across a lovely split level space with lots of fine original woodwork. There’s a high skylit ceiling at the end of the bar, with a collection of wall mounted walking sticks and some large modern art frames, giving way to a raised rear space with tables and chairs on a platform accessed by steps on either side, with nice balustrades, partitioned booth seating, integral bookcases and a rear snug with some delicate decorative woodwork and plenty of comfy seats. A beautiful curved staircase with a leaf-motif bannister leads up to the first floor gallery seating area which runs around the rear part of the room, looking down to the bar area. TV screens were showing the usual muted news channels and there was a nice ambiance thanks to a good sized crowd combined with the muted lighting and almost cosy surroundings.
On the bafr, there were three regular ‘Spoons ales and just the two guests, from which I tried a pint of Hyde’s Lowry at a very reasonable £2.19. The two barmaids on duty were super-friendly and helpful, running a tight ship along with the industrious duty manager. My beer was in good condition, which also reflected in the staff work ethic and the cleanliness of the pub overall.
I really liked this place and thought it had a terrific interior that I probably only scratched the surface of during my brief stop. It’sd not often that you feel you could settle down for an extended session in a ‘Spoons, but this one definitely gave me that feeling and the only downsides were small gripes that afflict all ‘Spoons. Shame there’s not much else worth checking out in this part of town, as this merits repeat visits.

I arrived here at the end of March as the second stop on a Spoons festival crawl. This pub was the best as it had a good range of festival beers on and was cheaper than all the others. It also had the top of the range 6.5% Russian Stout on that was excellent. The building is interesting and is well fitted out as a Cop Shop conversion as opposed to a Furniture Shop (or whatever) conversion.
It's 2012 GBG listed and deservedly so.
Well worth going to in a pretty dire area for pubs.

Nice conversion of the former police station.Named after a survivor of the Titanic who lived locally.

This is a large Wetherspoons with a country lodge feel and nice balcony area up top which is unfortunately reserved for diners. Even though two of the twelve hand pumps were off there was still an impressive amount of guest ales available. I found the service to be prompt and my very reasonably priced Guinness was spot on. There are some picnic tables that line the side of the pub, but these are railed off from a busy road and junction.
This is definitely one of the better JDWs that I have been into and I would recommend it to others.
