Looks like a cruise ship. If your cruise ship is full of miserable people and tables full of dirty glasses. In other words, just like every other JDW.

I was only here as it was in the Good Beer Guide. I would tell you about the beer, but incompetent bar service, where two teenagers were dealing with Onion Ring Crisis and frustrated boozers, meant I never got close.

The Jack Phillips is a Wetherspoons that is situated on Godalming's very nice looking High Street.
Once inside there is a long oblong shaped room which runs to the rear, the room is carpeted, the bar is on the left side, there is a slight raised area to the front, where there are normal tables and chairs, there are tall tables and chairs opposite the bar.
There was a decent enough choice of real ales on the bar,i had a drink Hoggs Back Surrey Nivana which went down very well, the other real ales noted were Everards Sunshaser, Peerless Pale,Banks & Taylor Dragon Slayer, plus Spoons regulars GK Abbot,GK IPA and Doom Bar.
I thought this was a decent enough Wetherspoons, that had a pretty upmarket type of customer,so i probably let the side down a bit by lowering the tone of the pub.

A formula 'spoons in a particularly unlovable 70s looking building amongst the fine older buildings of this town. Jack Philips was the radio operator on the ill fated Titanic ship's maiden voyage, he apparently tried desperately to obtain assistance to the sinking ship. Obviously a son of Godalming, a review of his life plus various Titanic related artwork adorn the walls.
As the chain go I've been in worse, on a lovely sunny day the front folding doors are pulled right back allowing in air and light and those lucky enough to secure a seat there get an al fresco experience added by lots of planted tubs and baskets.
Very long and narrow with entrances front and rear, brighter and airier than most JDWs.
Two banks of five, lots of usual suspects but a pair from Westerham, A Langham and a collaboration brew from the Netherlands. A routine 'spoons, being in upmarket Godalming, lacking the usual visual entertainment provided by the all-dayers.

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about The Jack Phillips (JD Wetherspoon)

Modern-looking 'spoons with a bright and welcoming interior (with pale wooden furniture and decent lighting used to good effect). Also much bigger than it initially appears if you walk through to another space of almost equal size at the back. Small - non-smoking - patio terrace under an overhang at the front on the building. Reasonable choice from ten handpumps, including Langham Hip Hop (£2.50).

A long open room cleanly decorated with eggshell blue walls and white ceiling all the normal tables and chairs you would expect in this chains pubs, all very nice and fresh looking but still a soulless drinking barn, albeit a pleasant looking one. Ten beers on or so I thought pre-order ,I chose Hogs Back Hop Garden Gold which unfortunately went on the first pull so I opted for Westerham British Bulldog, located at the other end of the bar, only for the barmaid to return to say "its been turned off", whatever that meant, leaving me with a choice of Greene King or Green King derived beers plus a couple of festive options, despite Greene King beers being crafted nowadays a went festive with a pint of the humorously named Red Nose Reinbeer from Cottleigh Brewery, which to be fair was decent. I am not as much a fan of these types of pubs as the previous two reviewers, but of course they serve a purpose,In my case it was a little too early for proper pubs to be open, that aside I wouldnt choose to return if and when better options were open.

Jack Phillips was some bloke who operated the radio on the Titanic and who went down with the ship while still sending out SOS messages to other ships. He was born in Godalming.
As noted below it is a nicely done light airy space but on my Friday lunchtime visit the staff were struggling to keep the tables clear.
On the bar were two banks of five pumps with the two usual GK beers, London Pride, Deuchar's IPA, Wychwood Piledriver, Langham LSD, Bingham Hip Hop, King Red River, Tillingbourne Black Troll and the Wadworth Full Sail Wassail American beer. I thought this was a good balanced selection and went for the Langham LSD (£2.50), a new beer and brewery for me and it was in excellent condition. This pub is a GBG regular and deservedly so on the strength of my visit.

A modern, clean and bright JDW (converted from a Waitrose so I’m told, bet that made the local’s heads spin at the time). Long and narrow, with tasteful powder blue walls and some nice fittings – modelled on an Art Deco passenger saloon of an ocean liner apparently. Because of this (I assume) there are no TV screens at all. Frankly, if more Spoons were decorated in this manner they’d be nicer places. A very good ale selection, my Bath Prophecy was near-perfect, so good I had an unscheduled second despite fierce competition from some other ‘come-hither’ options. Staff were courteous and on-the-ball. I ate here and the food came out in less than five minutes. One of Timbo's best efforts, I'd happily do this one again.

Standard spoons, quite good but avoid the quiz night.

Modern Whetherspoon pub. All the usual things are there. Has a quiz night. Very family friendly, whilst heading for the bar, had to wait for a procession of 7 baby buggies, we used to call them pushchairs. No smoking throughout.
