This pub has just reopened having been closed for a number of years whilst used as the site office for the general contractor responsible for the construction project immediately to the rear.

Externally much of the original Barclay's glazed tilework has been revealed; it's a little like that which adorns the former Southgate Arms, N1. Inside, the pub has been rebuilt. A single bar is on the left side of the pub. The rear two-thirds feature laid tables so I assume this area is for dining only. Downstairs lavatories are very swanky. The solid furniture and bar top are varnished mahogany-stained finish; the floor is of pale boards. Most of the clients (of which there were few) seemed to be rather vocal tracksuited locals.

Service was friendly and prices were reasonable. Aside from premium lagers, ales included a selection from the Meantime brewery and Wells Eagle.

There's nothing problematic with this pub but it didn't really do it for me. The problem I think is that dining seems to take precedence over drinking and the pub has really been rather over developed; it's a little like drinking in a hotel bar, i.e. a bit characterless. It would also seem that the place is only open until 5.00 pm on Sundays which is a bit lame. There are better pubs in the area (the Eagle and William IV), but the Crown & Shuttle has also just reopened in Shoreditch and I'd prefer the 10 minute walk to get there rather than drinking here.

This place has largely been run into the ground for the last few years, presumably because they knew what was coming. Well the inevitable has finally arrived, it’s closed and is being gutted, ready for complete demolition I suspect. It now stands alone and rather forlorn in the building site of the massive development going on in the area.

I didn't like this pub and I found the barmaid to be quite rude. I had to wait for her to finishing talking to her friends and then when she did grace me with her attention she was curt and obnoxious.

From what I can remember there were three hand pumps, one of which was dispensing below standard Courage Best and one was off and the other was unused. There were also some standard lagers available. There is a balcony overlooking a downstairs section and I spotted at least two pool tables. There was also a large plasma screen on the wall.

This is not a great pub and I'll not be returning.
