2 floor Lloyds spoons with the basement area larger than the ground floor.

The Milan Bar is a large Lloyds No 1 with a street level bar that supports six hand pumps and a downstairs bar with another three. Both obviously have a selection of standard draught and cheap food and drink deals are available.

For a Wednesday afternoon this place was very busy, which was down to the cheap beer rather than the ambience. There was no music and some plasma screens were showing muted rolling news.

There is a small group of tables outside for smokers and the entrance leads to a modest ground floor lounge area but with a very large staircase down to the basement bar.The ground floor extends alongside an arcade with a full length frosted glass partition running down one wall while opposite at the rear is a bar sporting six handpumps. The decor and furniture is classic 'spoons ,so nothing to get excited about. The ale choice on my trip was GK IPA,Abbott and Doom Bar as regulars with guest in the shape of Burton Bridge Golden Delicious,West Berkshire Good Old Boy (which on ordering I was told was unavailable but the pump clip stayed on display, bad practice) and Sixpoint Importer ,in good condition but a dull malty brew.
The basement bar is much larger and to one corner is a mixing desk with large wall mounted speakers,so the basement is the Lloyds No 1 part of the operation. The high ceiling and industrial heating vents make this windowless room particularly bleak and the serving bar here only has three handpumps for the regular beers,so buy guests upstairs.
The pub was calm on a Saturday afternoon but no doubt the atmosphere changes as the evening wears on ,so my rating reflects the time of my visit. It wasn't as bad as I expected ,but nearby The George is a far better bet for the real ale fan.

This pub has a bar on the top level and another bar downstairs. I never seem to be lucky in getting a decent real ale in here with the selection being pretty poor seeing as the London Ale Festival was on.

This place is a proper Lloyds No 1 with a very late license. I expected it to be empty at around noon, but was surprised to find it was as busy if not more so than the famous George around the corner.
It's built into a shopping centre, probably one reason why it was so busy. I don't know if the downstairs part was open, but as far as I'm concerned it should have a sign over the stairs saying "Abandon Hope All Ye Who Enter Here" especially on a Friday or Saturday evening.

There were just six pumps with the 2 GK beers, boring Bombardier, Exmoor Gold, Bateman's Yellabelly and Wadworth / Chelsea Sunset Red.

I went for the Sunset Red (£2.49 I think, I didn't write it down) which was in outstanding condition, but more expensive than most suburban Spoons. The quality of the pint overcame all the other factors that put me off this place.

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about The Milan Bar (Lloyds No 1)

Badly lit main bar, even by the side windows which look like they ought to help illuminate the interior but disconcertingly don't (due to the dingy arcade alongside). The basement bar is even worse, and is really not very nice. Uninspiring choice from the four of six upstairs handpumps that were working, with nothing different offered from the three clips visible along the downstairs counter. However, the quality is usally OK, and my recent pint of Directors (£2.10) was in good shape. Overall, it remains a better bet than the Yates's across the road or any of the neighbouring bars. Just.

It's worth updating this review to mention that despite my reservations about this place, it has proven itself capable of keeping its beer very well. During the 'Spoons festivals, a pint costs £1.89, which is great value, making it worth a look.
April 2010
This pub has a Tiger Tiger to one side, a Reflex on the other side and a Yates's opposite and is clearly pitching itself in direct competition with all of them.
The pub is spread over two floors - a gloomy ground floor with plenty of seating including bar stools along a ledge that looks out into the High Street, whilst downstairs only really gets going once the seating has been removed and the dance floor revealed.
Three hand pumps, all in action, offering Dorking Brewery Dry Hop, Stonehenge Sign of Spring and of course Ruddles (nothing from the current JDW festival though). The Sign of Spring was very well kept and the barman offered me a taster beforehand (albeit in a plastic shot glass) due to the fact that the beer is bright green which had put-off previous customers.
Music was playing quietly enough and TV's showed muted news coverage on a recent lunchtime visit.
There are three better JDW outlets all within easy enough reach of this place, which seems to have found its niche with the youth market rather than ale drinkers.

Old Blue left this review about The Milan Bar (Lloyds No 1)

Attended a multiple colleagues' birthday bash here on Friday evening. Arrived at the ground floor bar at 6pm to find three real ales available - Hyde's Ship Shape, Cotleigh Nutcracker, and Ruddles Best - and to be informed they only serve in plastic glasses from 6pm. Couldn't see my colleagues, and having taken an instant dislike to the place I paid 98p for half a Ship Shape in the hope either they'd already gone elsewhere or could rapidly be persuaded to do so. Alas I found them well settled in downstairs. On the plus side, the Ship Shape was really rather good and I had several of these, and a Nutcracker which was also quite drinkable. This involved repeated trips upstairs as they don't have real ale at the basement bar. Several of us were here slightly involuntarily and ended up playing the quiz machine in desperation.

Clive Thompson left this review about The Milan Bar (Lloyds No 1)

I wondered about going in here when at 7pm on a Saturday they had a doorman but decided to anyway and it was fairly empty. Three handpumps on, Ruddles, Abbot and Pedigree, in the middle of a JDW beer festival!!. Had a double Jack & Coke at £3.65 which came in a horrible plastic glass. Both fruit machines were turned off with out of order signs and the quiz machine was rejecting every coin. The Gents was in an awful state. Went downstairs for a look, there were no cask beers at all and it was just depressing, a few sad looking couples plus a loud group of young drunk males who presumably got in before the doorman started his shift.
