ROB Camra left this review about Burns Hotel

I remember this as The Hansom Cab, but it appears to have reverted to its original name. I hadn't called in here for years, but a sudden torrential downpour whilst walking around York soon put that right. It doesn't look as if it's changed much, if at all. Classic wood panelling and red banquette seating. The usual Sams fare, I had a pint of OBB and Ms CAMRA had a half of the Cider Reserve. Sign up saying this is a digital free zone. The numpty woman sitting across from us promptly got her phone out and took a picture of it!! Two old boys also got a telling of for swearing, which to be fair, they were doing quite a bit of. It's a classic of it's kind and we should call in more often.

Deeply traditional Sam Smith's pub so subject to Humphrey's usual restrictive foibles in exchange for being wonderfully unspoilt. It is fitted with nice wood-panelling from floor to ceiling and dark red leather banquettes in all directions with brass trimmings. The only jarring note is a line of fairy lights round the top - no idea how that fits into the traditional ethos. Just OBB on pump of course, but in good order and still hanging on at £3 a pint. Populated almost entirely by old fogeys, but a nice relaxing place to drink if you are one.

still a really good Sam Smiths pub with the traditional wood panelled interior. Mostly older locals in here, conversation led with the phone and swearing bans strictly enforced. OBB at the new price of £3 a pint, still decent value by central York standards.

Alex Conway left this review about Burns Hotel

Classic Sam Smiths pub with the usual selection of beers including their only cask beer Old Brewery Bitter (£1.80). This is accompanied by Alpine lager (£1.73) Double four lager (£2.00) Taddy lager (£2.10) Reserve Stout (£2.20) as well as also featuring Sovereign Bitter, Dark Mild, Pure Brewed organic Lager and organic wheat beer. The OBB on my visits is usually nicely kept but as in all Sam Smiths pubs the occasional poor pint does squeeze through, but for £1.80 a pint who is complaining.

After the recent refurbishment this pub now looks very clean and presentable with lots of cushioned bench seating and nice armchairs. At the very reasonable prices they sell their beer for it is no wonder a pub right in the heart of the city center like this is so popular.

Sam Smith's pub so you know what you're getting old style interior( not as ornate as most SS pubs I've been in) and SS own label beers/spirits.

Have to agree with Will, this is a haven of peace away from the busy city centre, especially in August. I was impressed with the oak panelled interior and the sunning bar area. I was also informed from a staff member that the pub was in line for a refurb, can't understand why as it looked in great shape to me. A decent pub this one and defo worth a visit.

Will Larter left this review about Hansom Cab

Sam Smiths Old Brewery Bitter is a fine beer and even at £1.74 a pint still ridiculously cheap, certainly compared with most other establishments in York. Some of Sam's pubs can be a little rough, and the brewery's owner has a reputation that makes me glad I don't work for him, but a good Sam's pub is worth a visit.

I stepped off the street to find a comparative haven of peace after the busy city centre bustle on this spring afternoon, the regulars here looking as though they might be saving themselves for a rowdy evening later on, either here or elsewhere. Service was friendly and efficient, and as I was only stopping for a quick look around I didn't bother trying to find a seat. The rear of the main room was pleasant with the light coming from the large tented skylight above. The wood panelling on all the walls was very smart, with pictures dotted about here and there of, amongst others, hansom cabs and several people who have been coming here for 50 or 60 years.

My first visit to the Hansom Cab today and although it's not one of York's many beer exhibition "must visit" types, it's one that I think I will be coming back to.

Alan Winfield left this review about Hansom Cab

The Hansom Cab is in the middle of York in the pedestrianised area.
This pub is a Samuel Smiths tied house and once inside there is one long narrow room the bar is on the left and there are a couple of seating bays at the front and the rear is standing or sitting on a tall stool next to the shelf.
Whenever i am in York this is a pub i always go in as it is so central and the beer is cheap and nice, there is one real ale on here this is Samuel Smiths Old Brewery bitter this was £1.60 a pint and very drinkable.
I think this is a really nice pub.

Appreciate Sam Smiths pubs, you'll miss them when they're gone. In an age of corporate blandness, their individuality is a real treat! Excellent bitter at £1.60 a pint, and all human life thrown in as well. What more could you ask for!
