Known for a brief period as Harpoon Louis’s this 18th Century town pub has thankfully reverted to its original name and become once again somewhere worth visiting.  First impressions are not favourable – you enter through a dirty side alley, which is covered and full of smoke, but once you’re past that furrow it just gets better.  Inside you find a labyrinthine layout: the main bar is long and narrow, reaching all the way to the front.  Behind that are a cellar bar and another bar up some stairs above it, while a small Spartan dining room, one end of which looks like the waiting area of a Glaswegian massage parlour, leads to the toilets. There is also a TV screen in the dining room, but it was off when we visited.   The staff were really very pleasant, and the atmosphere inside is a real contrast to the outside appearance.  Food is on offer – particularly Pieminister pies. There were 4 or 5 boxed ciders behind the bar, plus three ales on stillage – Will’s Neck, Yeovil’s Ruby Stout and Freestyle from Fine Tuned.  The beer was in excellent condition.  This Plough gets seven stars from me.  It’s on the 2018 Somerset Ale Trail, and rightly so.

Quirky pub with entry from an alley at the side. The bar is at the front with more rooms at the back. Up to 8 real ales on stillage and a good selection of ciders. Food served and 2 pint carry outs available. Live music advertised.Located just down from the train station and walking distance to the cricket ground.

I paid another visit here as I had heard that the landlady had been advised on how to keep real ale without possessing a cellar. I don't know who offered the advice but it was obvious they don't know what they are doing.

On entry, and being hit squarely in the face by the smell from the bogs, I oredered a pint of Moor Revivial from the unimaginative selection which comprised Otter Amber, Exmoor Gold, Bath Gem (ok) and Cotleigh something. Someone should tell Justin at Moor, as it was awful, too cold (the opposite extreme to usual) flat, bland, watery: I drank up and left without trying something different

Disappointing; it could be very good.

One of only two good traditional pubs in Taunton, though located in the rougher end of town. Popped in early last night between the railway station and home. A few drinkers in the bar or hiding away in the small cosy rooms at the back. Always 3 or 4 ales served by gravity from Breweries such as Otter, Exmoor, Cotleigh, O'hanlons and the ever present Doom Bar. Went for the Cotleigh 25 and it was fine, if a little warm (due to it being behind the bar rather than in a cellar).

Plenty of local cider (usually medium) available if you are that way inclined and a local told me that the pies are the best in town, if not in the County.

10/10 is a bit over the top, however a 7/10 is good for Taunton. Well worth a visit whilst waiting for a train

In my opinion, best pub in Taunton by long way, friendly staff, 4 local ales on a stillage arrangement behind the bar. Cider if you like that sort of thing, and REALLY good food, I had the best Steak and kidney pie I've ever eaten in there, and I've eaten quite a few in my time!
