This unsurprisingly dates from the late 18th century, but rose from the ashes in 1958, as I’m fairly certain that this was the result of Oxford Street being bombed in World War II; it now exists as a ground floor and basement bar in the podium of a large, ugly high-rise; lanterns and the arched projecting sign frame are clear indicators of its Taylor Walker heritage.
Much of the interior’s general style can be seen on my photo, rendering a detailed description otiose; unlike the previous reviewer, I didn’t reserve a table; had I done so, I’d have made do with just the one. Hip hop played at an acceptable level and lighting levels were low, coming from some chandelier device which could date back to when the place was built. Customers were few in number and young, with one witless fool giggling away at the bar like a hyena.
Ales: two unused pumps, Doom and Landlord at a painful £5.65 and fine.
This place is better than many modern offerings and is probably alright for a sit-down and a swift drink after an Oxford Street shopping excursion, but it’s in no way in line for a revisit from me.

Large one room place with bar to the middle. Four hand pumps nothing above 4.5% ABV. Too many tables reserved for me.

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about The Phoenix

The dark and rather unappealing façade on the unbranded M&B (Castle) pub hides an even darker but slighly more appealing interior. The main staple-shaped bar area has fairly plain wooded furniture and Ruby Jean's Diner menus, and there is also a basement bar which hosts regular comedy nights and live music events. Four handpumps, offering the ubiquitous Doom Bar and Tribute, plus Windsor & Eton Knight of the Garter (£3.90) and Cameron's 150 on this visit.

This is an OK pub in a very popular location making it quite a mission to get served during busy periods. Pride, Black Sheep, Rev. James, Frulli and premium lagers were all available during my visit and I found the staff to be friendly even though they were very rushed.

I think that there are better pubs nearby, but this place is OK for a few swifties.
