ROB Camra left this review about Golden Ball

Multi roomed locals local with a few tourists in the know scattered around. There's a fine glazed brick exterior and the interior dates to 1929 when it was refurbished by John Smiths in the days when they did that sort of thing. The pub is on CAMRA's Real Heritage Pub List and in the GBG2013. There are 4 rooms all with different character. The beer is John Smiths Cask, Bombardier, Everards Tiger, Deuchars and usually a couple of guests. It's all quietly comfortable and the locals are friendly. We often call in for one when in this part of York. Be warned though, it doesn't open until 5 during the week.

I must have called at a bad time, but the landlady wasn't very friendly and locals not much better. Enjoyed Salamander Pale Ale and Leeds Golden Best. Beer very good, company not - won't return.

There were six ales on hand pump in the main bar on our recent visit(Caledonian Deuchars IPA, Wells Bombardier, Timothy Taylor Landlord, Everards Tiger plus two from Ossett - Silver King and Big Red) and John Smiths on another in the small drinking area by the entrance. The lounge was being used for a private function, so we adjourned to the games room for the bar billiards. There is also a beer garden at the back, which is handy for those hot summer days when the pub fills to bursting.

John Bonser left this review about Golden Ball

Situated in a residential area of York close to the city walls, the Golden Ball is a fine traditional multi-roomed street corner local that is on CAMRA's National Inventory of Historic Pub Interiors.

An unusual layout consists of 4 rooms including one sports "snug" room with plenty of sporting memorabilia - signed caricatures of Darren Gough, Brian Lara and a photo of Brian Close's 1969 Yorkshire County Cricket side for example - and a bar billiards table. There's another unusual snug immediately on the right by the entrance corridor. The bar counter is in a room at the back of the pub and can only be accessed from the entrance on the other street.

A fine glazed brick exterior still bears the branding of John Smith's Tadcaster Ales and Stout. Also of note externally is an unused door which was formerly the entrance to the Jug and Bottle Department.

6 real ales were on - Deuchars IPA, Bombardier, TT Landlord, Everards Tiger, Ruddles Best and a beer from Northumbrian Brewery. The pub is a CAMRA Good Beer Guide regular.

I regard this as one of York's must visit pubs, for its unspoilt interior and atmosphere, but watch out for the late afternoon opening times from Monday to Friday

Luckily we arrived in York in the evening and it wasn't too much of a walk from the Brigantes bar. Some really old Tadcaster Ales ceramic tiled names on the exterior with multi rooms inside. Full of locals in here with 7 Ales on. the Bradfield Bitter and the Deuchars IPA were in perfect condition. well worth doing if in town during their opening times. This pub has won the York Press newspaper Pub Awards 2009 / 2010.

Forgetting Old Boots’ advice, I turned up here at lunchtime. This was an abortive journey as it doesn’t open at lunchtime during the week. Opening times are: Mon to Wed 5 – 11 PM; Fri 4.30 – 11.30 PM; Sat Noon – 11.30 PM; Sun Noon – 11.00 PM.

Back street local with a superb intact 1930s interior, six pulls with John Smiths Cask, it is their pub after all, plus guest ales; all I tried were in fine condition. Several rooms with a bar billiards table in one. Good local atmosphere, friendly staff and customers of various ages. A gem in the less fashionable south west area of the walled city.
