The Egerton Arms was the last pub on a recent Tuesday crawl around Stockport so my memory of this L-shaped pub is a little hazy. There are a couple of large booths in the front windows and seating runs up the right wall. The bar supports standard and premium keg, as well as two handpumps. One of these was unused and the Sharp’s Doom Bar was off. I’ve noted that when the gents toilet door opens there is a clear view from the bar of men lined up at the urinals. Might give this one a miss next time I’m in the area.

With a few minutes between trains, I made my way along St Petersgate to take a photo of This Godless Place, just around the corner, for this site. I couldn't help noticing that *this* hitherto godless place is now a Craft Union pub and therefore part of a pub group that has attracted my attention for a few months now. They seem to be places that are well run, attractively decorated, with managers who seem enthusiastic about their business, and with drinks that are reasonably priced. Some of them have real ale, but this one's two hand pumps had just one pump clip, Sharps Doom Bar, and that was reversed. Several other taps were indicated as being out of commission, probably the consequence of a busy Saturday night, including Worthington Creamflow, which is my default beer when there's no real ale. So I had to go for the John Smith's Smooth Crap which - and I hope Alan Winfield can forgive me, wherever he is - was not too bad really.

This is a traditional looking pub from outside and is in an area full of various real ale options. Inside it's a roughly square room with the bar to the right and a pool table to the rear. It was quiet when I arrived on a Thursday evening but there were two younger men accompanied by two younger women who may have been about to disown them. After a while somebody started bringing in music equipment but I didn't stay to find out what was about to happen.
The bar has no hand pumps with the best option being the John Smith's smooth crap (£2.70) which lived up to its moniker.
This place seems to be completely geared up to live music or karaoke and I can't think of a positive thing to say about it. It avoids the score of shame by a whisker.

This a standard pub and considering what's around it does seem to have settled for being average rather than trying to compete. It seems to be 2 roomed with a central bar. Its clean enough but if you're after real ales there's nothing here for you. Nothing that I saw anyway.

A scruffy mess on the outside and the young nicotine bouncers outside in the pouring rain were just as scruffy. No real ale and I really couldn't be bothered having a half of fizzy stuff in this dump, so I left, which is really unusual for me. That's how bad it is.
