Only one table in the entire place not reserved for food.

Prime walking, cycling and fishing country too.

Beer is all badger - Tanglefoot (over £4 a pint) looked good, flat as a pancake.

THE ANCHOR: Pyrford Lock, NOT to be confused with the Anchor pub in Ripley high street, a mile or so away! (Chalk and Cheese..!) A lovely pub, especially on a fine day, and if you are travelling by longboat along the River Wey and you need a place of refreshment of the liquid variety! :o) Its easier to find this pub by boat than it is by car (...I usually get lost in Pyrford/Wisley trying to find it..!) :o( A nice pub when you can find it. 7/10 TJ

Revisit, this time around 1300 on a sunny Thursday in November [another escape from RHS]. Plenty of parking spaces this time, a fair number of people in, but not too crowded, no wait at bar for instance

We were there mainly for lunch, but I had Fursty Ferret, which like my previous Tanglefoot seemed to lack "sparkle" but was not "flat", it was tasty enough though, even at £3.40 a pint

The food chosen this time was baguettes, the cost of £5.25 each may deter you, but they are packed full & do come with reasonable portion of salad & crisps on the side, fair value given area

I will continue using the Anchor when in area, assuming I can park

Just an update, tried to use it on August Bank holiday Monday, around 1400, a nightmare, no parking at all, parking all the way along the very narrow road, from what we could see the pub was heaving, never stopped due to lack of parking

The only way to use this pub on holiday I reckon would be get here early, walk, cycle or come by canal boat

That is popularity for you, a lovely spot but you may never see it

Came to this idyllic location yesterday for the first time in a while, for a lazy afternoon drink on the banks of Pyrford Lock. The usual sort of Hall & Woodhouse fare available - I was on the very agreeable Firkin Fox. I have found it very hit and miss both for food and service in the past, but didn't eat there this time. Though on one hand I find it irritating how un-pubby it has become (for example even making you form an orderly queue at the bar just to get a drink) it remains a great place to go for a drink by the river on a warm day. Having finally resolved in my mind that this is what its role ought to be, I shall use it accordingly in future, and expect my view of it will be all the better for that reason.

Went here as an escapee from the crowded eating places in RHS Wisley, A Thursday lunchtime around 1330. Now I am sure what Nick D says is true, but we had meals not sarnies, for all I know they may well come from catering packs but my fish & chips and partners scampi was hot, well cooked [or reheated?] & lovely. I also had pint of Tanglefoot, which to me seemed lacking in "sparkle" but as it is not my normal drink maybe that is standard for this beer

Maybe as it was a cold but sunny Feb day we struck lucky with lack of crowds [Think they must all have been in RHS Wisley scoffing with their kids], but the staff were pleasant, polite, helpful & attentive

Meals around £9 mark, sarnies under £5 ish, Tanglefoot was £3.25 pint

Like Nick says, lovely spot, and I think I would avoid on a sunny weekend in August, but a dullish weekday in Feb was fine, however I will return during my RHS weekday, non school holiday visits to RHS Wisley. I will let you know how it pans out regarding who had the lucky / unlucky one off experience with this pub

Putting a sign up in the road saying "turn in here for the best hospitality in the country" is always going to be a hostage to fortune unless you've got a Michelin star or three,or you are my mum. Making out there are 'real chefs' in the kitchen is only going to compound the misery.

A BLT sandwich is a simple classic. A doddle to do well but just as easy to ruin. If there were any real chefs in this place they wouldn't microwave the bacon until the fat is barely set, slather the stale bread in industrial quantities of factory fresh mayonnaise and send it out with a plateful of undressed salad. However a sixteen year old kid who probably thinks bacon is a kind of fish, because that's what the catering pack bacon tastes of, would have no difficulty churning out this stuff. And Hall and Woodhouse have no problem rushing you a fiver for it.

Beer is usual Badger range, but no ordinary bitter yesterday lunchtime, which is a pain if you're driving. I just can't believe they had run out on a Saturday morning. I can believe, given that there was no member of staff aged over twenty around, that there was no-one who knew how to change it, or could be bothered to even if they did.

This was our first visit to the Anchor since the refurb, and I didn't want to be too hard on it considering what went before, but I'm afraid it's still relying on the gorgeous location within half an hours drive of about three million people. If you piss off a few punters, what the hell, there are plenty more where they come from.

Inside, by the way, it is standard faux gastropub, indistinguishable from thousands of others.

It is of course, because of the location, a lovely spot to while away a sunny afternoon, or a stop for a pint on a walk along the canal. Just don't expect the finest hospitality in the land.

Much-extended pub in superb location by Wey Navigation. Mainly given over to family eating; can get very busy.
