Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about The Monument

Mostly a locals pub away from the main tourist area, but it is quite close to the station and offers something to most people? The main bar area is to the right as you enter, with the pool table and dartboard to the left-hand side, and a dining room further back (up a couple of steps). All parts refurbished in a restrained semi-modern style, but it retains a traditional feel. Landlord and Brains SA (£5.20) available from the bank of three handpumps.

As described by Roger below, this is a welcoming town local, no nonsense, with a bit of a sports bar feel to it, gaming machines and all. The staff were friendly enough, though a few of the locals were starting to get a bit rowdy. Two ales on, Whitstable Bay and Proper Job, both in reasonable condition. It’s a decent enough pub to drop in when passing, but not a destination of choice.

I should firstly point out that this was the second to last pub of a 13 pub haul over a single day so the finite details of the Monument are a bit sketchy from my notes.

Situated a few minute’s walk from the station but away from the town, the pub isn’t immediately obvious to the casual visitor. The attractive partly weather boarded exterior is further enhanced by a series of flower baskets and the pub in general looks quite welcoming.

The interior consists of a decent sized main bar, public bar to the laft and a dining section to the rear. Much of the pub was bedecked in commemorative Union flags for the Jubilee/Olympics which gave the place a patriotic touch in what would ordinarily be a quite plain and run of the mill décor scheme. The public bar area contained a pool table and a brace of dartboards whilst in the main bar, a large display lists the various forthcoming actvities and special offers. To the right of the bar, separated by a set of pull to doors, is a the dining section / function room. There is also a garden with childrens play area and the pub does appear to be quite family (and dog) friendly.

The 2 ales noted on my visit were Harveys Best and Hop Back Summer Lightning, the latter being decent enough although my inability to count coins at the time didn’t lead me to note any price comparison. Food was in the £9-£10 bracket with special curry/steak/fish/grill nights throughout the week.

This was my first visit despite numerous trips to Whitstable and it does seem like a worthwhile addition to my growing number of local pubs worth seeking out although I would need to make a return visit (preferably earlier in the day) to get more of a feel for the place.
