Will Larter left this review about Golden Lion

A former Tetleys house seemingly built contemporaneously with the surrounding housing estate in the 1930s, this is now a free house serving Grays beers on hand pumps. Of the three hand pumps, only one was available on my Tuesday afternoon visit, this was Grays Celtic Gold, an anonymously bland straw-coloured beer with no discernible flavour. Grays Best Bitter and Mild are listed as regular beers, but experience of these suggests that they're not worth the trip out of town to discover if they are on.

The front rooms of the pub have been knocked into one, with another room to the rear of the centrally placed bar. There's a nicely polished parquet floor and a fairly rough-looking brick fireplace in the right-hand part of the large room, which was presumably the former public bar.
