Pleasant pub slightly out of the town centre, but well worth the effort to cross the main road. At the time of my visit in March, six hand pulls offering Beartown beers (Kodiak, Literate, Peach Melbear, Glacier and Creme Bearlee, with one pump off). The Creme Bearlee set me back £1.75 for a half. There was also a separate pull offering Lilley's mango cider. I also spotted 9 keg taps on the back wall behind the bar. Pizzas are available on Tuesdays, but I am unsure of the offerings on other days. Dogs are welcome, a beer garden was signed, and children are permitted until 8pm. There is a wood burning stove. Overall a friendly feeling place and one I would be happy to return to.

In common with many places the unweilding hand of town planning has dumped a dual carriageway between the town centre and the less central bits resulting in a shiteey wall of tarmac between the middle and outer bits of the town centre. It’s a monumental pain in the arse for people who walk but not as bad as some examples of the ridiculous thinking of the 1950s & 60s that some places are blighted by. Anyhoo, once you navigate the shite dual carriageway it’s a brewery tap but in what could be an old pub but probably isn’t. Personally I don’t think Beartown beers are much to write home about and a visit to their brewery tap didn’t change but rather reinforced that view. As a pub? Well yeah it’s better than ok , bland decor, over-weaning but well meaning staff, mediocre beer, noisy music but hell some people love that, I’ll leave ‘em to it.

A proper traditional pub that seems to attract mainly beer drinkers. No big Gin or Prosecco promotions in here, just a good line up of 6 Beartown ales and one cider. They most probably did have a good selection of premium lagers, but I didn't take much notice of that. Apart from the bar and lounge area situated on the left, there was also a couple of rooms upstairs. The front room upstairs had some settees and a large flat screen TV. The smaller room at the back had another flat screen TV and a gaming console with a selection of games to hand. Beerwise, we went for the Beartown Kodiak and Beartown Pit, both of which were in top condition and reasonably priced.

This is a small terraced pub with several rooms. You enter into the bar area and then there is another room at the rear and to the left. While I was there I overheard the barman talking about it closing for a refurbishment.
The six hand pumps had five Beartown beers and Flipside Dusty Penny. I went for the Dusty Penny (£3.20) and the Ginger Bear (£3.05) both of which were excellent.
This is another good Congleton pub that is well worth going to and is GBG 2017 listed.

Surprisingly the only pub on my Congleton visit that actually sold Beartown Brewery ales. Good pub.

This pub has been a flagship pub for Beartown and Congleton for a long time, however over the last 2/3 years it has just not recaptured it's niche of good well kept local beers.Hence the rating of 6.

Visited in May 2010

As the name indicates, the Beartown Tap is the brewery tap for the local Beartown Brewery situated only a couple of hundred yards away, and which started brewing in 1999.

Situated slightly away from the town centre, it's a smallish single bar pub with two separate lounge areas as well as a drinking area around the bar. The interior is comfortable and pleasant, but rather nondescript and a collection of posters and enamel signs from German and Belgian breweries reminded me of The Borough Arms in Crewe ( also incidentally a brewery tap ) where I had been the previous day. In addition, there's some fine old photos of Congleton to admire. There's an outside garden at the back down some stairs.

6 Beartown beers were on and, as is usual, all bore the "bear" name and branding. The Beartown name is in recognition of the fact that Congleton used to have a Bear Warden whose role was to supervise the bear baiting that took place when fairs came to town. The Bearskinful - £ 2.30p - was in good form. The pub has been a CAMRA Good Beer Guide regular in recent years and has won local CAMRA Branch awards.

This pub is well worth seeking out
