Philip Gaskin left this review about The Volunteer

We had just visited The Horseshoes in Upshire and called in here on the way home as I had not visited this pub for years. McMullens have not maintained their normal standard of decoration and atmosphere inside, and it feels like any other corporate pub. This is predominately a food pub, but Country Bitter and AK were available. Our main gripe is the prices. Coke was 70p more than in The Horseshoes, and Country Bitter 30p. Another customer was complaining about the price of Heineken at £3.75. The food prices were higher than the place justifies and I suppose that the prices reflect what they can get away with. I have given a low mark because we normally like McMullens pubs, but this one is not good value.

Cannot really improve on the review below except to confirm that it does get very busy on a Sunday when the sun is out as it attracts families from Waltham X, Waltham Abbey and the North London surrounds who come out for a trip to the forest.
I tend to avoid at this time, but the couple of saturday lunchtimes I have popped in when cycling through the Forest the AK has been perfectly fine.

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about The Volunteer

Reasonable-sized and tidy McMullens pub on the edge of Epping Forest. Quiet when I visited late-ish on a weekday afternoon, but I imagine it gets very busy at the weekend if the weather's any good. Look's like it concentrates on food, so there are just two handpumps - Country and A.K.
