Probably now the cheapest pub in town, with a pint of Caledonian Best costing me only £2.40. Tennent’s Lager, Tennent’s Light, Stella Artois, Guinness and Magner’s cider are also available on draught. Largely unchanged since my last visit, it consists of a fairly basic bar with an adjoining games room containing a pool table and dart board, and a restaurant through the back. The ornate cornices, support pillars and wooden flooring, combined with mustard coloured walls and maroon seating, give the bar an appealing, old fashioned look. There are also interesting stained glass windows advertising Younger’s Alloa Ales, which were no doubt once sold here. It was surprisingly quiet for a Friday night, with only half a dozen other customers present.

Recently refurbished from its former rather decrepit appearance, this remains a basic and unpretentious pub. The wooden floors and bare walls give it an old fashioned working man’s bar appearance, as do the clientele. There is a pool room and a darts board in a separate room next to the bar. Stained glass windows surviving from another era advertise “George Younger’s Alloa Ales,” which are not on sale here and may not even still exist. The pub seems to have two names as the word “Gallery” appears on the frontage beside “Caledonian.” This presumably refers to the restaurant at the rear, which offers meals until 8.00 p.m. It also seems to be locally known as “McGowan’s,” probably after a former owner.
