More of a restaurant than pub. Standard, trying for high end but not really offering much. No real ale

I had high hopes for this place, having noted that both this branch and its sister pub in Mold were both in the Good Beer Guide. Indeed, I was expected something akin to a micropub. Unfortunately, this was the worst of 3 new pubs I visited in the town centre.

The interior does have space for drinkers and there was a good mix of drinkers and diners. Although it has more of the feel of a cafe bar than a micropub. Just 2 of the handpulls were clipped, both of them with Salopian beers - Oracle & Darwin's Origin. I chose the latter and received a half pint that was in a very poor condition. I suspect it just hadn't been pulled through that day.

Staff were quite pleasant and cheerful, but I'm really not sure how this place can be in the Good Beer Guide, the irony being that the Mold branch was even worse.

The Fat Boar is very much a food led pub, but I was fine ordering at the bar to the left of the entrance. Premium keg was available and one of the four handpumps was in operation drawing Ostara Bitter. Whilst waiting I decided to eat so plumped for the burger. The place was empty, but for some reason they still decided to sit me right next to the door on the shittest table in the house. It cost £15 and the burger was massive, but the patties didn’t really taste of anything and the chips were cold. But I was full after so didn’t really care. The staff were polite and maybe there is a better atmosphere on Saturday evening when the live music is being held, but I don’t plan on returning.

Now a sister pub to one in Mold. Similar in style but lacks the garish cushions of its sister. Generally food led it can smell of garlic prawns at times. Still table service as of 18/8/21 annoyingly. The seating is to your right on entering with the bar to your left. An outside area is to the right of the bar. 4 handpulls but sadly only Tim Taylor Boltmaker on. Tends to be popular with families of an afternoon so beware of little pains in the arse babbling loudly. It's nice enough but not very 'pubby'.

A very recent refurb and name change from the Black Horse, this is now best described as an upmarket (for Wrecsam!) pub diner. Diagonal wood planks, undressed brick, black and white tiling, Farrow & Ball shades – that sort of thing, quite well done to be fair. Decent rear garden is a bonus. Four pumps with three ales on, stouts from Boss (a terrible blackcurrant flavoured mess, NBSS 3), Big Hand Dry and more regulation ale in Stationhouse bitter, which was so-so (NBSS 2.5). Noted that the punters in this place had the cleanest shoes in Wrexham and one female specimen who entered during our stay looked like Pete Burns (Big Brother era). Odd. But very Wrexham. 5.5

Alan Hurdle left this review about The Fat Boar

The "tired" old Black Horse has been transformed into a modern pub and restaurant similar to its "sister" pub, The Fat Boar in Mold. The light, part tiled and part wooden, floor gives the place a bright clean look, but the very rough pointed bare brick wall makes it look a bit unfinished. Three Real Ales are now served, including the house beer Fat Boar Gold. Again, like the Mold version, the restaurant is on the first floor, but I did not venture upstairs for a look.

A very 'tired' looking pub on the edge of Wrexham town centre. Just a few locals were in the rather dull main room. Young children running about unsupervised added to the 'atmosphere'. No Real Ales were available but not the sort of place I would return to if they were.
