An 18th Century back street boozer that has gained a good reputation for its food. It’s up a narrow side street and parking is problematic. Much of its original charm has been lost through renovation and conversion of the building, but it’s still a pleasant place to eat and socialise. There is a long front bar with a tiled floor, formed from conjoining smaller rooms, which has plenty of room to sit and eat or just socialise. There is a large TV screen on the end wall, but this was switched off when we visited, and there is a large open hearth the other end, above which is the daily menu and specials board. Food is varied and freshly cooked – some pub classics and a few original dishes. Portions were large and it was enjoyable, but not cheap for the area. The staff were really pleasant, and the beer was good. Three ales on from Abbey Ales: Bath Best Bitter, Mild and IPA. Keg beers were Peroni, Guinness and Cotswold Lager. I’d be happy to come back, and it’s a cut above the other pub in the village in terms of its ale.
