A modernised local at the posh end of town (the gulf between the two is remarkably pronounced). Two area layout, separated by a bit of wall left from a knock-through. Left is a bit loungey with pub carpet whilst the right hand ‘room’ has a telly and bookcase and feels more like a public bar. Fairly neutral decor, creams and browns. In COVID times this place looked like something from ET, with plastic sheeting at the bar (“can’t kill the customers!”), full face masks and a single key for the bogs, handed back and sterilized after each use. Two pumps unclipped but Rev James was on and was stunningly good (NBSS 4.5) even in a plastic glass. A very friendly guv'nor who welcomed us and had some chat, as well as having comedy arguments with his lady behind the bar. The cheer fed through to the punters, with much ribbing and ribaldry amongst a group of middle aged locals. A slightly decrepit shove h’appeny board was dusted off for our use after we were seen to be playing a card game – nice touch. The locals are lucky to have such a nice little pub. If the beer is always this good I’d happily drink Rev James most nights without complaint.
