Impressive old red brick building, hosting an old school and slightly shabby Spoons-by-numbers in the ‘Edwardian brown’ décor beloved of older JDWs. Two guest ales; Purple Moose Dark and Rudgate Valkyrie and sadly both were unfinishable (NBSS 1.5 x2). Service was at least pleasant, a shame that the beer was well-below acceptable; it’s hardly likely to tempt the keg-drinking locals. A mystery how this made the Good Beer Guide - are the local CAMRA branch that desperate to make up their numbers? 4.5

Beer wise, this is by far your best bet in Shotton. Next to Shotton high level train station (Bidston/Wrexham line) and up the road from Shotton low level (Chester/Holyhead) station. A bit Wethers-by-numbers, including climb to toilets, this open plan pub isn't the worst. That said, it ain't great either but as its by the station and trains are hourly at best then its fine instead of waiting on the platforms. As noted, it doesn't have the largest selection of real ales for a Wethers but it beats the nearby Clwyd hands down. The hidden Castle pub nearby is a better pub if you're wanting a more traditional boozer.

Pub quiet on Tuesday afternoon. The only barman was taking a food order for two people. Took ten minutes to understand each other. I was hoping the Titanic was worth the wait! "Sorry most of them off, just Ruddles available, Hobgoblin coming on soon!"
This is quite normal at this 'spoons. Plenty of gins but never any real choice of beer. Not many options of other pubs nearby either!

Standard Wetherspoons, next to railway station & on busy main road. Some seating in the front of the pub.

This place was busy and noisy on my Saturday midday visit with younger folk drinking from bottles of lager and shouting at each other. It's quite a decent conversion of what appears to be an original pub with some wood panelling on the walls. The beer choice wasn't great with doubling up and two local beers with clips showing that had gone off, a practice that is annoying, unnecessary and deceitful. Available were Ruddles Best, London Pride, Hanlon's Stormstay and Lymestone Stonefish Mild. I went for the Stormstay (£2.15) which was in good condition. Despite a better than average interior I found this one unimpressive.

This Deeside pub was built in 1943 and after being called The Royal Charter for a decade or so opened in 2010 and after a one million pound plus redevelopment was unimaginatively named The Central Hotel (Although the pubs original name there must have been some iron and steel industrialist in the Shotton area worthy of the honour)
Called in on a Wednesday afternoon and was quite surprised to find the pub very quiet. There was the usual standard beers on show and the now ever frequently seen couple of pumps with the "coming soon" clip on.There was a modest number of tributes and acknowledgments to the local steel industry but nothing special and found it just another run of the mill Spoons pub.
