Now called the Libertine: Following what has to be said is a very impressive make over the “Windsor” is now “The Libertine” and seems to be moving more towards the gastro pub market, at least for the daytime trade – a good move it has to be said. From the outside the bar looks inviting with French style light grey coloured doors and stylish lettering. The bar itself is bright with wooden floors, ample seating and tables with stylish wooden walls (3/4 wood effect and 1/4 painted grey). Black and white pictures of pop icons (Madonna, Jim Morrison, Hendrix etc) in ornate picture frames (some pretty large) adorn the walls, giving the place a distinctive feel. Four large lamps light up the already stylish wood effect bar which looks well stocked with wines and spirits nicely displayed on modern back-lit shelves and 2 slim TV screens at either end of the bar (volume low). Drink promotions are still available with a malt whiskey of the month at £2.50 and a beer of the month at £2 etc. We went for a coffee and bite to eat on our visit and I have to say the food (for the price) was really very good with 2 ample and tasty sandwiches with a proper salad accompaniment and 2 proper coffees, all for under £10. Staff (as always ) were friendly and helpful. The toilets since my last visit (when it was the “Windsor”) have been modernised and the effect is spot on (they are still tiny though). The karaoke is still on Friday’s for the regulars. A definite plus to Hamilton’s ailing night life (and a great place for food during the day) well worth a visit.

The review below has summed up the pub well. The only thing to add is that when I visited on Wed 30th July 2014, the other pubs in the local area have the Legia Warsaw V Celtic game on the television. Since there are no football colours allowed in the Windsor Bar the place was empty.

Recently re opened under new management in Feb 2014. I Popped in for a quick look around and a few changes have been made, gone are all the nik naks (and there were 100s of them) that used to be scattered around the old bar, on the walls, hanging from the ceiling etc (statues of Laurel and Hardy, scale toy planes, posters , pictures etc) and have been replaced by (imho) much nicer framed photos of the area in black frames. The bar is still recognisable but has a much more more subtle look now. Spirit and Beer selection is standard for the area (Tennents, McEwans, Guinness, Smiths etc) and prices are the norm (Smirnoff and coke £2.70) Was very quiet when I was in (around 8pm on a Friday) but the Windsor has always been a late starter and the DJ was warming up - although I was never a regular the clientèle when I was in seemed to consist of a few regular faces - Good to see this bar back I like the new look and whilst I probably wont be a regular I will no doubt pop in now and then.

The garishly painted frontage sets the tone for what you find when you step inside. This must be one of the most lavishly over-decorated pubs I’ve ever been in. Almost every available bit of wall space is covered with posters, paintings, portraits and prints of pop stars, film stars and vintage cigarette and beer advertisements. The shelves are filled with statuettes, guitars and other random items and even the ceiling is hung with model aeroplanes, model cars and plastic parrots. No expense has been spared on the décor, which makes it a pity that there were only two other customers present, despite the fact that it was between 7.00 and 8.00 p.m. on a Friday evening. Entertainment, in the form of singers, karaoke and quizzes is promised almost every night, although there was no sign of it while I was there. It’s all a bit over the top and is the kind of pub you’d expect to find in Blackpool or some other holiday resort rather than in Hamilton. It does sell drink, though, with Fosters lager priced at £2.90. Tennent’s lager, McEwan’s 70 Shilling, Tartan Special, John Smith’s, Guinness and Strongbow cider are also on draught. Worth a visit for curiosity value, but nothing special otherwise and certainly not a place for minimalists.
