With so many pubs diminishing in size or disappearing altogether these days, it’s a pleasure to find one that has actually expanded. A new bar and snug have been added at the back of the building, on either side of the beer garden, since my last visit. The bar is long and narrow and the snug is small and square and both have been converted from other use within the existing old building. The snug looks as if it might have been the Residents’ Lounge in the days when the Crown offered accommodation. These are welcome additions for drinkers as the original bar at the front does tend to get busy with people dining, especially around lunch and evening meal times.

The draught beer selection makes a refreshing change from the standard fare routinely on offer in Lanarkshire pubs. There are two cask ales, Lia Fail and Wayfarer, but after a long walk on a hot day, I had a thirst for something colder, so I didn’t take the opportunity to sample them. Fortunately, two beers from Glasgow’s WEST Brewery, which are brewed in accordance with the 1516 Reinheitsgebot German Purity Law, were also available. An excellent pint of their St. Mungo Lager (4.9%) cost me £3.80, but, not being keen on wheat beer, I didn’t try the (5.2%) Hefweizen. Instead, another excellent pint of Stella Artois cost me £3.90. For less adventurous drinkers, Tennent’s and Carlsberg lagers, Belhaven Best, Guinness and Strongbow cider are also on draught and there is an extensive, and fairly expensive, wine list.

An already excellent pub which has got even better since I was last here, The Crown is undoubtedly the best one in Biggar and one of the best in Lanarkshire.

Gary's comments from 2005 still apply: real ales, real fire and good food. There's now a small, well sheltered beer garden/smoking area at the back.

A traditional Scottish pub with excellent homemade Scottish food with haggis and steak pies being among the favourites. The locals often pick up the various instruments that are dotted around the place and play through the night next to the open fire. Real Ales sold and the pub is a member of CAMRA.
