Much the same as it was on my previous visit, although possibly bluer, brighter and with more female customers.

The blue, white and red painted exterior, the portrait of the queen on the inside wall and its proximity to an establishment called the “Imperial Social Club” should tell you what Scottish football team it’s a good idea to support if you drink in here (for the benefit of English people, I don’t mean Celtic). “Unpretentious” and “basic” are the discreet euphemisms which might be used to describe “The Burns.” It is actually named for Scotland’s national bard, and there is a mirror on the wall with his face on it too. This is precisely the sort of place which used to be described as a “man’s pub,” and, as women are, generally, conspicuous by their abstinence, it still is.
