This has the look of a pub which has been considerably grander and larger in the past. In fact, it appears to have been almost cut in half, with what was the rear section walled off and converted to other use. The horseshoe bar, high ornate ceilings with supporting columns and huge brewery mirrors are still quite impressive, but it all looks rather run down and in need of refurbishment. There were several TV screens, all showing sport, a juke box, a dart board and games machines. A pint of Guinness cost me £2.80 and Tennent's, Carling and Coors lagers, John Smith's heavy and Strongbow ccider are also on draught.

The Crystal Bell or a pub of similar name ( it was called, if I recall correctly the Royal Albert in the 90s)has been on this location for years (100's of years I think) and there are plaques on the wall of the pub that commemorate its history - the pub itself sits on the corner of a pretty impressive looking building, and is pretty impressive itself- sadly this is a cause of concern for the pubs long term future as this is a residential building and the new owners have a clause in the contract that forbids them from playing loud music and having live music - as a result the pub is very quiet at the weekends after 6pm (in fact the owner now closes it at 7-8pm if bar is empty) a shame as its good traditional type pub, and without doubt one of the nicer more family friendly ones in the Gallowgate area (albeit it it also near the popular Merchant city area). The bar inside is pretty nice with a large seated area (for food) at the window and a few seats tables at each end of the bar itself - the central curved bar area is quite impressive and has a fair selection of beers and spirits (and bottled beers etc) no real ales - prices are good for the area and the owners are chatty (and even put on the jukebox for you - now low not loud once you know the music you like) - punters seem a loyal but dwindling bunch and are very friendly (not that there are that many in after 6pm) Heard the food is also pretty decent and is busy during the day - Hopefully trade will pick up as its a good pub. Worth a visit even if its just for a quiet pint.
