This is the kind of pub you might expect to find in an episode of Midsomer Murders rather than in industrial Lanarkshire reality. Approaching from Uddingston Main Street, it looks like an archetypal old village inn, with sagging roof and two smoking chimneys. Inside, it doesn’t disappoint. The two smoking chimneys are the result of two, real coal fires, one at either end of the main bar, which looks suitably quaint and ancient tavernish. Two large TV screens, showing football, detract only slightly from the overall impression. There is a small, more modern, lounge to one side of the main bar and a games room containing a pool table, dart board etc. to the other. Formerly a regular winner of CAMRA’s Lanarkshire Pub of the Year award, there are still two real ales on sale. A couple of excellent pints of Fuller’s London Pride cost me £3 a time and Deuchars IPA was also available on hand pump. Tennent’s, Carling and Stella Artois lagers, McEwan’s 60 Shilling, Belhaven Best, Guinness and Strongbow cider are also on draught. The Rowantree is not to be missed if you’re in the area.
