A trip into deepest, darkest Govan to sample this late 1950’s timewarp CAMRA National Inventory pub; of those we did in Glasgow this was the most visually impressive, even if quite careworn; an oval topped bar, blue lino floor, red leather banquette seating. To the back left is a large doored lounge, surrounded by ¾ height wood and glass panelling. Feels like it’s hanging on a bit and there certainly needs to be a few quid invested to uplift the place, the outside is very scruffy indeed. Trepidation on entering but the fearsome-looking landlady (late off a stint running a pub next to Ibrox) was very affable and upon enquiring the reason for our visit (yes, we stood out!) took me on a guided tour of the premises, which was ace (she pointed out the carved stone cat high up on the outside ledge) and insisted on taking a photo of us in the pub so we could show our friends whilst expertly seing-off the locals who wanted to photobomb it. Standard keg selection, so a decent pint of Tennants for me. I ended-up warming to this place and I hope it manages to keep going – feels like it needs a bit of urgent investment to be the pub it should be though.
