Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about Cask and Barrel (Southside)

Attractive ale-house, converted from two adjoining buildings with rather different facades so it looks a bit lopsided from the street. Inside, there is an imposing 'U'-shaped bar, partly open to the rear to form an island. Dark furniture with much breweriana. Excellent selection of local and regional ales from seven of eight handpumps in use that day, with my pint of Hadrian & Borders Porter (£3.50) being in very good form. Well worth the longish walk (or short bus ride) out from the city centre.

Old Boots left this review about Cask and Barrel (Southside)

A plain but pleasant Victorian styled pub catering to the ale-house market. Very nice horseshoe bar with two sets of four pumps however bar-blockers make it hard to see the clips but there's a blackboard at the far end of the pub where you'll not see it till later. Naturally the beers are mainly from smaller Scottish breweries. Bench seating round the walls with a couple of high tables, one converted from I think a hogshead. Four big screens and one wee one in a small pub might be overkill but hey ho this is as inseparable from Edinburgh as brown sauce on your fish supper. There's a small lounge at one side. Decent staffing, great beer quality and pleasant surroundings - it all seems good to me.

8 real ales on during my visit. Well worth the short trip from the city centre. It makes a good triple header with The Southern and Dagda.

Well refurbished alehouse following the style of their other bar on Broughton Street. The walls are full of brewery mirrors and other breweriana. Lots of varied, good quality seating and tables. There's a large horseshoe shaped bar serving a variety of Scottish cask ales, plus the odd visitor from down south. We visited on a midweek lunchtime when it was very quiet, but I suspect it gets busy later on. My pint was very well kept and the pub is deservedly in the GBG2012. It's a bit of a walk out of town, but it's worth it, especially if you visit the nearby Dagda Bar as well. A very pleasant, tourist free pub (apart from us of course, but as I used to be a local....).

A large, modernised pub which attempts to achieve an olde worlde look but, at the moment, just looks too new to be successful. There is a good selection of beers, including real ales and the bar is exceptionally clean and tidy. I think it would benefit, though, from having a rather more "lived-in" look.

The Junction Bar has been renamed Cask and Barrel (Southside) & is due to open soon. At least 4 handpumps.
