Will Larter left this review about The Crown Hotel

An attractive building, standing out from its mostly unadorned, grey stone neighbours by virtue of its black-and-white facade and colourful inn sign. The bar is to the right on the entrance corridor, and I was greeted by a barrage of noise from drinkers, dogs and children, and a barrier of the aforesaid drinkers sitting on four or five bar stools. I managed to get served, after a struggle both physical and auditory, with the best half of Theakstons Best Bitter I've had for many a year; perhaps they should convert all of their production of this beer to the keg version. (There was an advertising board for bottles from local Borderlands Brewery, but the bar manager told me they'd failed to deliver that week. As I pointed out, the brewery is less than half a mile away near the Co-op - surely it cannot be that difficult?)

The conversation, such of it as I could follow, was dominated by a young man - very drunk - determined to tell his life story to anyone who would listen. All the locals had heard if before, so that left me and two other Englishmen; I soon made my excuses and left in search of somewhere quieter.

We've been fishing in the local area for about 20 years and chose the crown this year 2010 because of the closure of our usual haunt. We most certainly did not appreciate what we had been missing. Locals in the bar very friendly and welcoming as were staff and proprietors. Rooms small but clean and more than adequate. Good facilities and absolutely excellent meals. Pricing is also very reasonable. On road parking was not a problem and we had a most enjoyable week thanks to both staff and locals alike.
This will be our haunt from now on.

Just a basic pub/hotel with no real ales.
Not a bad place, gets one or two locals sitting at the bar and the meals are fairly cheap.
Theres a bit of a horseracing theme to the place a big saddle over the door horseshoes everywhere and horseracing on the tv.
Dark pannels, dirty tiled floor, its not the tidiest of places but it does have a good wood fire blazing in winter.

We were lucky enough to come accross this delightful hotel whilst searching for accomodation on our way through Scotland. We only stayed the 1 night unfortunately, the rooms were great, the staff friendly, the dinner we had in the restaurent magnificent and the local patrons very entertaining.
Thanks for your hospitality
