I was already a bit miffed with this one as it was shut earlier on the day despite the opening times on the door saying otherwise. Turned up at 5.20pm to find a strange place shrouded in darkness, the only lights on were at the bar. Mish-mash interior with a conservatory off right, basic bar to left with a pretty servery sporting simple back-lit stained glass/plastic and a modern-looking exposed brick room behind. GBG listed and three cask, 2x Greene King and the ubiquitous Five Kingdoms - a half of their Rebus was fine though think there was a GK tint off the line (NBSS 2.5). Weird, gloomy and left rather unimpressed – if I wanted to drink in the dark I’d become a goth and go to the local cemetery.

I chose Wainwright over the choice of Old Speckled Hen or Hobgoblin across the 4 pulls. A riverside cabin like place in a popular park, next to a pizza restaurant, very little to recommend it architecturally or in terms of interior decor. Functional with three outside areas, one with views of the park and river, inside are multiple spaces around a central servery, functional Marstons beers although no dysfunctional customers on my, fleeting, visit. Mix of furnishings, screens & machines for the socially awkward (!). Staff were young women but actually on the ball, beer quality wasn’t great but not close to vinegar, so a biggish tick for a Dumfries pub. There is also a rear entrance from St Michaels Street. Probably not as bad as my tastes suggest but not one for me.

A popular pub on a sunny evening with its open area looking across the Dock Park to the river Nith.
It has a regular clientele and a friendly bar staff. There are always three real ale casks
