Alan Winfield left this review about The Mardyke

The Mardyke is a large looking pub that is on the Hotwell Road.
Once inside the bar faces in an oblong shaped room which runs the width of the pub,the floor is bare boarded.
There is lots of wood panneling, there are wood bench seats and wood pew seats.
There were two real ales on the bar,i had a drink of Wickwar BOB,which was a decent drink and dirt cheap, the other real ale was Doom Bar.
The pub was very busy on my Saturday morning visit.
I quite liked this pub.

Cheap basic pub with cheap basic punters. Courage Best and lots of cussing. Only redeeming feature for me was the fairy lights. Gets rammed on Friday and Saturday nights. If they operated a swear box they’d be able to buy the Grain Barge opposite within a month.

£1.80 for Courage Best. Spit and sawdust pub without the sawdust. Hopeless jukebox. Friendly barman. Interesting punters.

Blackthorn _ left this review about Mardyke Music Bar

A bit of a biker's pub, there's often a long row of them lined up in the road outside with their riders loitering on the pavement so they can have a smoke. Also handy for booze cruises which sometimes stop just opposite.
Inside it seems almost like a country pub with plenty of wood panelling and fairy lights all over the ceiling.
Some interesting characters at the bar using some pretty offensive language. The landlord clearly didn't mind this as he was conversing with them and seemed fairly disinterested in serving us.
Beer was just Courage Best and Directors as I recall. A pint of Blackthorn and a Thatcher's Dry cost £3.50 which seems ridiculously cheap these days.

Another nautical / military reference in a Brisol pub name: Mardyke is a port handed over to England after a succesful raid during the Anglo-Spanish war.
