Small and friendly bar on the southbound one-way system through Oban. The small room is fairly simply decorated and includes a few Scotland rugby shirts and scarves with a TV screen, which presumably shows live sports.

A handful of locals were sat at the bar. I took up residence in one of the 4 or 5 tables. Some kind of festive tree spouting out festive tunes was triggered into life by anybody entering or exiting the toilets at the far end of the bar.

Real ale is no longer available here. The keg selection was Kopparberg, Aspalls, Tennent's Lager, Madri, Menabria, Belhaven Best, Budweiser, Heverlee & Guinness.

The Tartan Tavern is one of the first pubs that you meet when entering Oban from the South. Very traditional local pub that serves Belhaven Best, Tennent’s Lager, Stella, Strongbow & Maltsmiths an American style IPA. On the pavement outside the pub is a steel cover which opens to allow barrels to be dropped into the cellar. This steel cover has drilled out holes to show the pubs name.

I was pleased to discover that this has re-opened, as it was always one of my favourite Oban pubs. Although it has been refurbished, it hasn't changed fundamentally and is still the same welcoming and unpretentious local it was before. Prices are reasonable, with Guinness at £3.50 a pint and Tennent's lager at £3.10. McEwan's Export, Caledonia Best and Heverlee lager are also on draught.

Now under new ownership the pub has been decorated well, a nice place for a pint, with friendly staff, and a good bunch of locals, and if you wish to eat you can use the oban steakhouse across the road.:-)

When I passed by here on a Monday evening in August 2011, with the intention of going in for a pint, it was closed. The drinks adverts had disappeared from the outer walls and there was no sign of life, suggesting that it had perhaps shut down. I very much hope not as I liked this place last time I was in it and agree completely with the other reviewer.
